I have gotten a couple e-mails this week from old Larry. He is trying to sell me rods and reels and fishing gear of all sorts.

I have seen for a while they were dealing in clothing. Hell, he's trying to take up the slack for Johnny Morris buying up Cabelas and driving us all away.

Talked with a buddy who works at cabelas and they can’t keep fishing gear on the shelves. Most lakes are jammed with boats and people are getting out. Fishing gear has huge markups lots of profit.

Midway started offering fishing gear a little over a year ago IIRC...Seems like when Bass Pro bought Cabela's and subsequently raised prices across the board Cabela's hasn't been as crowded as they used to be. The pricing structure seems to have left an opening for other online retailers to put their foot in the door and swing it open. Should be interesting to see how it goes with them....

On mark ups, that would seem to be the case, a small piece of metal with a hole at both ends and a hook, or a rubber skirt and lead and a hook, for $5-10. Materials cost has got to be nickels, marketing, shipping and packing can’t be that much.
Oh well, we keep buying.

I have a gunsmith friend who told me 20 years ago that Larry Potterfield said he would put Cabelas out of business. I thought at the time he was blowing smoke. Maybe he was right.

I know a guy who used to own small sporting goods store and he said the fishing stuff was where he made money due to people always needing more and new fishing related equipment. Rifles, scopes, binos, knives, etc normally last a long time. Tackle is always being lost, worn out or people want to add to what they already have. Plus lots of people fish and the window for fishing basically goes from age 2 until the grave.

Neuse Sport Shop has deals on their Penn reels and combos. May have other stuff on clearance too, didn't dig too deep. Free shipping on most stuff too.
