Tyson was the same and seemed to think, deep down, that he was undeserving.
I disagree. Cus D'Amato wasn't just a trainer. He was a boxing Psychologist. He would sit for hours just talking to Tyson,...getting his mind right. D'Amato had spent his life in the boxing game and he had learned that the mental conditioning of boxing was every bit as important as the physical conditioning.
D'Amato made Tyson the alpha predator of boxing.
Watch the fight between Tyson and Spinks. Tyson knew that Spinks couldn't handle him and Spinks knew it too. You can see from Spinks body language that he didn't want to be in the ring with Tyson. Tyson is bouncing around and can't wait to get to Spinks.
Spinks was 31-0,..and Tyson just walked up to him and busted his head,...just like he knew he would,..and just like Spinks knew he would.
Frank Bruno sure didn't want to be in the ring with mike at all.....he had scared written all over him......probably the best tyson fights were with razor ruddick...they were brutal.....bob

Yes, that was fight which showed a pretty prime time Tyson against a Spinks who entered the ring already beaten; much like Patterson against Liston. This was an opponent who was tailor made for Tyson. By the way, this was when Tyson won the title; when he beat the champion. For his part, Spinks did less than almost any defending champion I've seen. He threw virtually no jabs whether offensive or defensive and certainly made no attempt to get Tyson's attention. If he had landed one solid punch or made one decent move, whether offensive or defensive, he could have made it a fight. I don't remember which fight it was, might have been against Bonecrusher Smith, but Tyson came back to the corner and complained, "He's holding me". Kevin Rooney replied, "You're lettin' him hold. Stop doing that", but Tyson kept right on getting tied up and kept right on initiating the clinch. He continued to do this through his career. D'Amato did amke a potentially great fighter out of Tyson but without him, Tyson was on his own and was not up to the task. I suspect that D'Amato kind of liked for his fighters to be dependent on him. GD
