As I read it, "Reconstruction", brought by the good Republican's of the day was worse than the war.

That is what happened after after a back-shooting coward killed the best friend the South could have had after the shooting stopped.

100% correct. In those days the Northeast "Radical Republicans" wanted their pound of flesh and were adamant that they were going punish the South and rub their noses in the dirt. Lincoln, and subsequently Johnson wanted to make Reconstruction simple and relatively painless to reunite the Union and to get on with things.

The strict and punitive nature of the final Reconstruction caused resentment that still lingers today in some places.

I have read, it is only in the last 50, or so years a Republican can be elected in the South.

They called conservetive Democrats "Dixiecrats" years back.

I got here too late to predict, accurately, that this would quickly head in the same direction as the thread on the television series.

In those days I could see fighting to save Atlanta. Today I could see buying Sherman some matches and diesel fuel!

having a little discussion last night. wife's greatgrandmother was in atlanta when sherman burned it.
grandson asked her what she thought of grant? she didn't say anything, just snarled. i told grandson it's been 150 years but no body forgot.
i enjoyed the series,and learned a number of things.
i did not enjoy the post war summary and politicizing.
i was thinking this morning, about the effects of turning 3.5million uneducated tribal people loose.
and then watching the riots in minnes, where the death of a man however unfair means you can go down and loot a target store.
that "we are all equal" thing just doesn't cut it. We may be all members of the human species, but that doesn't mean i have anything in
common with one of those looters are their ancestors.

Didn't watch it. I can't stand shows with five minutes of commercials every five minutes. When the commercials come on, I switch to another channel. Often don't switch from that one until a commercial comes there.
