Said it, and seriously, he reminds me of Trump. You take as many of them as you can get, with losing none of you. And at the time, unfortunately you were them. None back then were asking the other to brunch.

The goal was there for all to see. All you had to do was tap and it would have stopped.

100% correct. In those days the Northeast "Radical Republicans" wanted their pound of flesh and were adamant that they were going punish the South and rub their noses in the dirt. Lincoln, and subsequently Johnson wanted to make Reconstruction simple and relatively painless to reunite the Union and to get on with things.

The strict and punitive nature of the final Reconstruction caused resentment that still lingers today in some places.

And as pointed out in the Grant series, what some of the Confederate veterans did to some blacks when they got home made things a lot worse.

Last nights episode made the important and deciding factor in the success of the Overland Campaign, the construction of the James River pontoon bridge by A company of the Engineer Battalion. To this date still the military's longest temporary bridge.

Its not easy to even find mention of what is basically the forming of what we have today. But here is one and the best of the ones I could find...

Company A, U.S. Engineer Battalion, June 1864: “…one of the most brilliant scenes of the war.”
