By IMMANUEL JOHNSON | STARS AND STRIPES Published: May 28, 2020 Gabriel Ramirez spent his childhood dreaming of being a Marine, but that dream seemed unattainable as a 365-pound teen nicknamed “Meatball.” This week, Ramirez, 18, was on his way to boot camp, 186 pounds lighter. At the end of Ramirez’s sophomore year at Rancho Buena Vista High School in California, Marine recruiter Staff Sgt. Anna Rodrigues spoke to his class and later asked him about his interests. “The kids I talk to, one thing I look for is heart,” Rodrigues said in a phone interview Wednesday. “I am looking for someone that won’t quit and will accept the challenge.” The talk made a big impression, Ramirez, of Oceanside, Calif., said in a service statement prior to leaving for Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

Respect. I suspect and hope he’ll make a good Marine!
if a man speaks, and there isn't a woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

Good for him, respect. I have noticed there are a lot of latin surnames holding the Medal of Honor the last 75 years or so. Not so many of us Norwegians. grin.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Thumbs up for Gabriel........ The kid's got himself some motivation. That he's gonna need when he gets to boot camp. Best of luck, Pvt. Ramirez.

I guess not all of the Worthless Generation is actually worthless.
Good on him. I hope becoming a Marine turns out to be rewarding for him.

Good on him. I hope becoming a Marine turns out to be everything he wanted. I don't think "worthless" is the right term, more "aimless'.

What is MEPS ?.......... I don't recall the Corps having that in 1969....... Or maybe my memory is going. Military Entrance Processing Station. The initial physical screening for service. Don't when they started but I had to do one there in 1985 as a precursor to even starting acceptance. The flight physical at NAMI in Pensacola cut a bunch more!

Well done Pvt Ramirez... Son (cross country runner) failed MEPS the first time in 2011 due to being 2-3 pounds underweight. Went back in two weeks and passed by a pound. Has been in 9 years now. Proud of him.
