Do you run an engine before you shut it off and check the oil?

I don’t understand the question.

1. Check oil.

2. Start engine.

Check oil

Start engine for 30 seconds or so

Shut engine off

Check oil

I’m sure I do it wrong.

Sam,

we'd run our 4 and 6 cyl Cummins and Cats when I worked for 24 hours, then work wanted us to switch to another to check the oil level and "rest them"..

Most of our mechanics thought it silly as long as the oil pressure stayed up (we checked them every 4 hrs minimum).

Hope that helps/

Let it set 2-3 minutes, let the galleries all drain back to the sump

After an oil change you only need to run it a minute or so.

Let it set a couple mins and you are good to go.

Are you running pumps?

Assuming they’re good, reliable engines, you should be able to anticipate their oil consumption. Do they have low oil pressure shutdowns?

Agreed. We kept logs on those engines I mentioned. The Cummins would basically not use any oil between changes. The Cats would use a quart or two every 24 hrs. We could just idle them down and add that much, but the "higher ups" wanted us to rotate them.

Whichever comes first: the oil change interval or loss of oil pressure.

Dude, that could get expensive if Murph fell asleep on the job.

Depends on if I have a pressure gauge to watch or not.

Pressure guage doesn't show oil consumption until it's too late.

I'd check oil every 24 hrs on a continuous run motor, could save a lot of money

Check when cold and level before startup. Every engine is different for oil retention and drain down. I've got motorcycles with a small engine oil reservoir that read empty after start up; they will be full after drain down.
