Robert Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, told CNBC on Monday the U.S. government should provide $14 trillion of reparations for slavery to help reduce racial inequality.

The wealth divide and police brutality against blacks are at the heart of protests that have erupted across the nation following last week’s killing of George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis.

“Now is the time to go big” to keep America from dividing into two separate and unequal societies, Johnson said on “Squawk Box.”

“Wealth transfer is what’s needed,” he argued. “Think about this. Since 200-plus-years or so of slavery, labor taken with no compensation, is a wealth transfer. Denial of access to education, which is a primary driver of accumulation of income and wealth, is a wealth transfer.”

Johnson made history as America’s first black billionaire when he sold BET to Viacom in 2001. Shortly after the sale, he started the investment firm The RLJ Cos. He’s no longer on the Forbes billionaires list.

Calling reparations the “affirmative action program of all time,” Johnson said they would send the signal that white Americans acknowledge “damages that are owed” for the unequal playing field created by slavery and the decades since with a “wealth transfer to white Americans away from African Americans.”

“Damages is a normal factor in a capitalist society for when you have been deprived for certain rights,” he said. “If this money goes into pockets like the [coronavirus] stimulus checks ... that money is going to return back to the economy” in the form of consumption. There will also be more black-owned businesses, he added.

Johnson said the need for reparations has been on his website since last year. “I’m not new to this challenge.” He said he’s not advocating “more bureaucratic programs that don’t deliver and don’t perform.” He stressed, “I’m talking about cash. We are a society based on wealth. That’s the foundation of capitalism.”

Later on “Squawk Box” Merck Chairman and CEO Ken Frazier, who is black, expressed doubts about whether reparations would be possible. “I don’t believe we’ll be able to get anything like that through our political system.” However, he said, “Leaders in the business community have to be a unifying force. They can be a source of opportunity. They can be a source of understanding.”

“We as business leaders can step up and solve many of these economic problems for people,” Frazier added, saying that education, particularly financial literacy, is the “great equalizer.”

I've never seen a case of discrimination of a black person at any place that I have worked. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen because it does. I just think it happens significantly less than they believe. They are trapped in this victim mentality. To me, their biggest limitation is their own beliefs and they are creating a self fulfilling prophecy.

They need to stop listening to the stupid Democrat Party, stop allowing yourselves to be defined as victims, stop thinking that everyone is out to get you and start taking ownership of your own life. And stop thinking life is somehow easy if you're not black. Unless you fall azz backwards into money, life is hard because it's fugking hard.

I want people to be successful and have a better life. I don't care who they are. But if you don't go to school or learn a skill, get a job, develop a work history and experience, stay out of trouble, leave places with no opportunities etc, then you are your own worst enemy.

Those same people that decry police abuse are the first to call the cops when a drive by shooting happens, or they are robbed at gunpoint.

The reason sites like this side with a policeman most of the time is because we are tired of African Americans refusing to accept responsibility for contributing to this issue. If you live in Minneapolis, you have a 1-20 chance of being a victim of theft or violent crime, yet less than 10 people are year are killed by police in a city of over 400K. Its a very small percentage of whites committing these theft and violent crimes. If the African Americans want to stop being harassed, choked out and seeing their communities locked down, then the solution is easy. STOP COMMITTING CRIMES. Until then you are going to be targeted more, stopped more, jailed more and receive longer sentences.

What is not going to happen, ever is for people that are on a site like this to accept that systemic racism justifies their actions.

Here is what I know - the child of an African American is more likely to get into an Ivy League school than my child. That child is more likely to receive financial aid and provided opportunities than my child, and that African American, after they graduate, is more likely to be hired into a STEM job over my child.

Opportunity is there - much more so than any middle class child has. The people that run this country - the Jeff Bezo's and Waltons - they don't see any difference between me and an African American. They aren't going to give either one of us a chance to get their wealth. The difference is I don't burn down my local wal-mart screaming about injustice. The people that succeed in life are people that take advantage of the opportunities presented to them. That's America, that's how its always been.

yea I understand it must suck to be a black male and get pulled over by the police for a broken tail light or followed around a store by the store owner, but when the cop does pull people over in your neighborhood and 60% of them have a warrant for their arrest and the store owner is losing $600 a day to shoplifting, there is a reason profiling works.

I don't live in the town I grew up in, I don't hang out with the kind of people I grew up with. You have to break that cycle. Join the military, go to night school, work 2 jobs, dedicate 5 years of your life to staying out of trouble and focus solely on what you need to do to change your world.

That ain't gonna happen but if it did, all their money would be gone in a week anyway, & then they'd want some more.
