'08 Trek 520 with many thousand miles and a few worn out parts replaced. The bottom bracket is due again. Last I had track of it there were 6,000 + miles on it. If you ride a lot it seems like not very many miles. If you don't ride much it seems like a lot of miles. One of my riding buddies sells a frame at 7 to 8 thousand miles. But that only takes maybe three years. The 520 is 42 LB as it sits and my fast old school aluminum bike is 21 LBs. But I come back to the 520 and gave my aluminum fast bike to my adult grand daughter. Then this winter got a Trek Verve + 2 electric bike. It has a Bosch Mid drive and helps me do my in town chores. So I am using the 520, some, but mostly the Verve. I will honor the steel frame day with a ride. I may keep the studs on as well. And by the way, I wouldn't think of running a bike even around the block without a Brooks SADDLE. Be Well, Rustyzipper.

Serfas exercise bike saddle, got one for my wife's new bike as well. I haven't ridden a bike over a block since about 1995.

I have a 2008 Specialized - Globe Centrum Elite & I love it. It's considered a Commuter bike. Best bike I have ever had.

Little bit wide for me-if it works it works, though. Mostly my gear wears Selle Italia Flite or Turbo sadlles bought back when they were the new thing, or a Brooks B-17. FWIW, my bet is you'll be going far further than a few blocks in short order. Cycling is fun as hell.

I worked in bike shops through the '70s and '80s and built quite a few road bikes from the frame up. The last one I built was on a custom frame with Columbus tubing from Bill Davidson and Campagnolo Super Record components. I still have that bike but don't ride it much anymore...

My bicycles help clear my mind, keep me sane and keep me fit. But steel? Do you still hunt with a musket?

Yes, when the mood strikes me, I DO hunt with a musket. It even uses rocks to get that black powdery goodness started. As both flintlocks and 531 were pretty cutting edge stuff when I was a kid, they remind me of a time when the world was new and exciting.

No, I'm only slightly less afraid of the internet than I am of fire. That stuff is all sparkly shiny and pretty and then the next thing you know the burning starts. Why, back in my day we just got in a big pile of bodies for warmth and we liked it. We liked it JUST FINE. Plus, cooked food is WAYYYY overrated. Raw chicken gave me the immune system I have today. Plus, the copious vommitting keeps me thin.

I have few older steel bikes although none made from Reynolds 531.

Couple of older Fuji bikes one is my oldest bike (1972), 3 late 80's Schwinn bikes, a 80's Nishiki and a 80's Nashbar triple triangle.

The Fuji Finest or the Schwinn Tempo are probably the lightest, but being well over 200 pounds I don't sweat bike weight that much, I'm more worried about whether it is comfortable to ride.

Paul, I'm guessing you don't have any bikes with friction downtube shifters huh?
