Wife and I went to Nebraska this week, to take a meat bison, and to fill up our empty freezers. The area is on the fringe of the Sand Hills, and the bison were in both open meadows and heavy tree cover. We located a small herd with a cow I would take for meat, but they suddenly stampeded into tree cover and we spent several hours trying to relocate them. When we did catch up with them, they had calmed down, and I set up on the Trigger Stix with my Ruger SRH .480 Ruger. A shot to the ear, and it was over. This was a 3-4 year old cow, and the meat yield was nearly 400 lb. Got home yesterday afternoon, and unloaded the coolers into our freezers. If this animal had weighed another 20 pounds, not all of the meat would have fit into our two freezers! This is going to be some really prime eating, at an overall cost less than buying this meat in a store.

Put some fresh T-Bone steaks from the bison on the grill for lunch today. Wow. Unbelievably tender and flavorful. Makes me wonder if I really want to kill any more elk for meat!!

Well done, that will keep you out of the grocery store for awhile. What size are your freezers? If I had to buy two more freezers that would blow the budget.

Great looking animal. Would love to take one with my Sharps. Would you mind PM'ing details of your hunt to me please. Location, cost, outfitter, what was included/what not, etc.? Thanks

I believe our main freezer is a 10 CF Frigidaire, the other is the freezer compartment of a 2-door Frigidaire refrig. Both were completely empty before filling them up with bison meat.

Man, to me that's a dream hunt. And if I shot an animal that big I could make sausage for a week. I'd need two more freezers like the one I've got. I bet Bison would make some fantastic sausage.

Then let my Filipino Wife get hold of some of it and make Adobo, Calderetta, and Tappa, My God I could live good with a few freezers full of that stuff.

Looks like lots of fun to take your own meat with a handgun. Be Well, Rustyzipper.

I used to take a meat bison every other year in WY. Great table fare.

Very nice. I would love to shoot a buff with my Shiloh also. Buffalo is my favorite meat. Where did you go and with who? PM if you feel more comfortable. I am looking for a retirement present for myself
