Patrolman Sammy Long was shot and killed after making a traffic stop on a driver for a traffic violation on US 67 near Rankin, Texas.

The suspect, who was AWOL from the US Navy, opened fire with a .32 caliber handgun as Patrolman Long approached the vehicle, knocking him to the ground. The suspect then took Patrolman Long's service weapon and shot him in the back six times as he lay on the ground.

A citizen, who was an avid deer hunter returning from a hunting trip, was stopped in a rest stop 150 yards from the traffic stop and witnessed the shooting. The man immediately retrieved his hunting rifle and shot the suspect at a range of 150 yards, killing him.

I'd wait till they beat him unconscious, pull a gun on them, take the cop's gun, shoot all three, put gun in cop's hand, drive away and get a Whataburger and shake.

The one time I passed an officer on the ground, wrestling with a suspect, I stopped and assisted. As soon as his backup was on scene, I split.

Barry I remember that incident ! The samaritain remained unidentified. I also think he had his kid with him. But I seem to remember the State Troopers Assn presented him with a special Colt mk IV series 70, .45 ACP as thanks.

We had the same thing happen here in Oregon a few years ago up on I 84 in NE Oregon... some guy from SC ...
He was shot by a local, with a CCW....saving the OSP Troopers life...

when I was down Arizona, IIRC it right... a Mexican guy was beating on a State Trooper for pulling him over..a Good Samaritan had the opportunity to clip the Mexican.. a few more good Samaritans stopped and rendered aid to the trooper, and one had shot the Mexican with his concealed carry permit hand gun...Turned out the Mexican was a former Mexican LEO, who had went into the drug business working for the Cartel across the border.. his trunk had something he had ran across the border...

another story with a good ending..
