Dad bought a half dozen ‘92’s cheap when I was a kid. This one was a basket case. The others were 90+%. When the 256 Win was announced he bought a barrel and put this together. It was a lot of work and things like modifying the firing pin and bushing around the pin for higher pressure loads. Firing a stock repairing and adjusting the feed. It was a lot of work. This rifle goes PD shooting with me sometimes but where we’ve been shooting them in the last two decades, the dogs are out a little beyond range with the normal high winds. But I think I’ll be taking it out again this year.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally
I've owned one on a Martini Cadet action (now sold) and still have a Marlin Model 62 and a .256 barrel for my Contender. I wish someone still made the 60 grain hollowpoints that were the original factory load, but the 75 grain bullets work pretty well. I need to take it out to the range again.
If I had the money, I'd build a custom Marlin Model 94 with a 24 inch barrel and 2/3 length magazine, pistol grip stock and a tang peep with a Sourdough front sight. Add a 4x or 6x scope in quick detachable mounts and have a truly fun little small game rifle.
Those factory loads were even more accurate than the 60 gr Hornady bullets. But I’m going to work with the 75 grain Speers. Those 60 grain Hornady bullets really blow things up. I have not tried the 75 grain Speers on anything live yet.
I thought I had some very pointed bullets and used the rifle as a two shooter. But I can’t find those bullets.
I also have a mold and cast some with GC’s.
