Won this on GB. FN barreled action. Barrel cut to 21", recrowned, and possibly turned, as the "Vanadium" marking is gone (proof marks remain). M70-style safety. Looks like Fisher bottom metal and D-T trigger. Bolt, extractor and follower are engine-turned.

Looking for any info on a gunsmith, stockmaker or gunstock company, or possibly a checkerer named Morton, which is stamped on a uncheckered ribbon behind the grip cap.

Very very nice. Style isn't exactly my cuppa tea, but I would've reached for my wallet too!

I've seen that stamp on a stock somewhere. When my gray cells align and the synapses in my brain start firing this morning maybe I'll remember more.

I hope so. The WWW has been zero help. I thought the stock might be something like a Royal Arms, tweaked a bit, but they're under a new company, whose website is a work in progress.

Any guess on the type of walnut? Don't often see that fine checkering on black. It has an FN crest, and is an H-collar, not a C like my other one. LOP is 13.5, and I can work the bolt without marring my lovely proboscis. Stock is pretty slender; I can circle the grip with my thumb and forefinger with about an inch overlap. 7lbs 12oz, not awful for an all-steel piece.

At JB's suggestion, I checked the listings of gunsmiths in an old (1964) GUN DIGEST. Found Morton Gunworks listed in Witchita Falls, TX. Going with that for now.

Pulled the stock and checked out the innards. See the thread in the Gunwriters Forum if interested.

Gary, you can let your synapses be! Thanks.

At that price I probably would have gone for it. You must be dying to put a few rounds downrange. Did that M8 6x show up today ?

Yup. Pretty pristine. Probably get it all put together in time for range day next week. Gonna try 130s first, as my other .270 does very well with my 150 and 160gr loads. Pretty obvious that it's seen some use in the field, and I'm going to hunt it as well.

I'm not much on the fancy schnable but I love the wood, the wrap around checkering and the cartridge chambering. It should be a real shooter.

But schnables are cool !!..... ( Although I could be under the influence of some of my German DNA ). Hoping to see a further report on that and how it shoots. Keep us posted, Pappy. I promise I won't make any .270 jokes.

Good thing it isn't a short range cartridge like 358 Winchester isn' t it? Be Well, Rustyzipper.

That style is a trademark of the one-handed gunsmith, Paul Morton, who made it.

Ain't afraid of.270 jokes; I'm comfortable with who I am.🌈

The spring before last I stopped at an LGS on the way home from work (a habit that while social in nature has cost me many$) and spotted a sporter based on the Interarms Mk X nice smooth clean lines of well finished walnut with a monte carlo and cheek piece. As you know well finished wood with smooth lines is an instant attractor. I calmly noted it was 270 win with a med contour 24" barrel and the inscription on the top of the barrel said PO Ackley Salt Lake City ,Utah. After checking the bore out I quickly got down to getting a price, paid for it, and took it home .Pretty is as pretty does ,the gun had weaver bases so I dropped a 3x9 Sightron on it and bore sighted it. It's a good shooter. I am betting yours will also be but you got to get off your butt and shoot it. Get going pappy, got to hear it's as good as it looks. MB

Got a lot of projects going on now. Trying to finish one before starting another (what a concept!). The Timney featherweight for my other FN arrived before the old Leupold for this one, and it required a good bit of dinking with (the triggerguard and stock, not the trigger).

Anyway, it's on the list. Not real concerned about super groups anyway, just good hunting accuracy with good bullets.

Mule Deer found a couple of old GUN DIGEST editions with pics of other rifles by Morton, a Sako and an M70. Both have the penis-shaped schnabel. The caption on the M70, which has a stock very similar to mine, states the French walnut stock on that one lists for a whopping $100. That's a 1956 price btw, probably 3 weeks pay for an ordinary working stiff.
