I’ve been working on developing a load for the 300 WSM with Federal’s 175 terminal assent bullet using RL 26 powder. I’ve worked up to 68.3gr which is Speers max for 180gr bullets. They suggested 3022 FPS but I’m getting around 2,860 FPS in a 24” barrel with no pressure. I was wondering what quickload data suggested for max. I’m using hornady brass, CCI 250 primer, 175 terminal assent at a coal of 2.930 and 24” barrel. I know the bullet is new and it’s predecessor the edge tlr isn’t much older so maybe I’m out of luck with quickload? Anyway any help would be appreciated.

Obie,

Quickload does not have the Federal Terminal Assent Bullets in it's data base.

Do you have any other 175gr bullets on hand you could use to compare the length of the bearing surface?

I had a feeling. No, that’s the only 175 I’ve got. It’s definitely a long bullet between its shape and solid copper shank.

That COAL is maybe .090 longer than average for a 300 WSM? That might be giving you some extra volume and lower pressure. My 23" and 24" 300 WSMs clock at 2975-3,000 fps with every single 180gr factory load I run through them. Those are generally right at 2.85 COAL. The loads I run longer need more powder to get there.

I was having some accuracy issues when I set the bullets standard length. I eventually measured my jump and it was substantial. 2.930” coal gives me a .05 jump and much better groups. Maybe I’ll load a few up in small steps and keep my eyes open for pressure signs and the chronograph readings. 2860 FPS is lower than I expected. My results were much closer to Speers data with the 150 and 165 bullets I’ve tried even though they to were set for longer than standard COAL.

That's what I would do.

Yup, given that you're over the typical book suggested COAL, you can prob load up carefully.
