Here is my 338, I was wrong about the serial number. The two digit Sako is a 30-06. This one is # 8, a single digit Sako. Pad needs replacing, but in good shape.

Love those Sako rifles.

That is why I adopted the practice of storing rifles with soft pads muzzle down in the safe.

That Sako has been in a safe a long time, never seen a Sako that bad.

I would not go that far. My 75 stainless in 06 had a healthy kick. My 7 mag 75 SS did not kick as hard but it weighed more. My long departed AV 30-06 had less kick then my 75 06.

They sure don't. I know of one .30'06 that kicks like a Missouri mule. A friend wanted me to check his zero before leaving for an elk hunt. I was using my M.70 Fetherweight with 180 grain bullets loaded to 2730 fps and his was loaded with 165 grain bullets about 50 fps more. I shot mine first and was pleased with 5 shots, then I shot his and thought it had blown up! I looked over the rifle and saw everything was alright so I fired another shot and received a kick just as hard as the first one. Both shots landed within 1/4" of each other and I pronounced it good.

First off, nice snag! This reminds me of my first trip to chase elk. My back up rifle was a Win 70 pf in 338 Win. After reading the rags for years I left OK enroute to SoCol. with a 700 30-06 slingin 180 gr. Grand Slams and my back up was the 338. At the ripe age of 18 I didnt think it could get any better than that. I had scored on 4 boxes of component Win 300 gr RN soft points that ended up shooting to the same poi as my 210 Partitions, so Luck was on my side. I managed to stumble on to a little 4pt bull the third day and let the ole 180 gr GS eat.

Oh, the good old days. Sorry for the wild ride off topic, but the memory was too good to pass on sharing. Funny how things and ideas change over time. Enjoy your Sako score. You might want to buy a lottery ticket while the wind is in your favor.

My three lug L61R is also in 338 Magnum. I bought mine in a Rod&Gun Club in Germany. The rifle was bought on a closeout in the GI club in the late 1960's. Some years later I had tried to get info on the rifle from the importer at the time-not Garcia. At that time F.I. found the numbers confusing. The suggestion at the time was that guns headed for the US had a different serial number range from those sold elsewhere.
