I need to exterminate several large ant colonies on my property. I've made a few attempts in the past, but they keep coming back stronger than ever. Recently discovered a huge hill behind some bushes not far from the house, this thing is probably 3 feet long and 2 feet wide! Another one is easily a foot and a half high and probably 14-16 inch diameter. Wasn't sure what it was so gave it a kick, sure enough ant hill. Any surefire solutions? Looked online but the remedies there seem pretty weak to me,like pouring hot soapy water on it. Anything I can use that will put an end to the whole colony?

When we were camping in Australia, one camp site, the last one available, was crawling. All I had was a spraycan of some Aussie version of WD-40. Next morning there wasn't ant anywhere.. Try WD-40

Poison is best but is my last resort as other critters such as my dogs can get into it to. The two best "natural" remedies I have found are skunks and bears but they can have undesirable side affects too.

One could get an aardvark I guess, it would be a natural solution plus give people something to talk about as you bring it on trips to town. wink

Orthene powder. Available at hardware store in black tube with yellow top. Don't water in. They'll deliver it to the queen. In a couple days, nest dead.

Note: if you use the Orthene regularly, they'll stop colonizing and spread to a yard/area without it.

I have the same ant/roach/rodent problem here
because there are 5 section 8 houses in a row
to the immediate east, and an unknown number
of other rental properties on the other sides.
None of these people treat for any kinds of pests
other than 1 elderly white woman that has the
exterminators in regularly for flea treatment.

I should amend that, because one of the border
jumper residences is being fumigated for bed
bugs this weekend.

If your case is similar, about the only thing to do
is put out poison regularly at the first sign of any
pests and continue until any survivors are gone
back to where they came from.
BTW- ants will get in any electrical boxes or A/C
outdoor units or relay boxes or telephone connections.
You're best off to skip any "kind " or "friendly "
solutions and go straight to applying poison

We have our yard sprayed every 3 months. They use something that’s not harmful to pets. Keeps the bastards away.

Bifen XTS, mix 2 oz. per gallon water, soak the top of the mound and 2 ft around it pretty good.

Thank me, later.

The best product for killing ants is TERMIDOR. I did the perimeter of my place in April 2014 and have not seen an ant since.

I've used those little blue packets that restaurants give us for coffee and tea .
It is a neurotoxin called aspartame. Usually works but bugs get used to it sometimes and everything else too including weather extremes.
I've used it as a bait for concrete ants. Killed the Queen's too.
It works on humans too unfortunately.
It makes you fat. It poisons your brain and causes Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, severe migraines, death, and the list goes on and on. Someone's bound to say, I be used it for years and I am ok. I warned family members about that and they told me the same thing. One got a bad case of dementia and the other died from it. They were addicted to diet pop.

I forget the brand, but a combination of what I just said and the bait stations seem to be more reliable.

Anybody try those? I'd like to know your results.

Here's a bunch of DIY PEST CONTROL on this chart.
I'm outta nutrisweet/ aspartame so tomorrow I'm using a mixture of boric acid (sold for that purpose) and sugar paste. I found a bunch of colonies that took over my soil amendments and potted plants that have been outside. There's a good instructional I'll share with you if I can find it again.

Here's the chart

Ok so couple suggestions for Bifenthrin, I'll see if I can find some in town tomorrow. I bought some sort of ant killer bait stations that apparently use Borax, so figured maybe that was a good option but then again I've used them before and they didn't seem that great.

I cheat, I kill the little pricks with mulesing powder. It is particularly effective on meat ant nests.
