Have an action on the way and getting ready to order my barrel from NSS, A Criterion sporter weight 26 inches long. Mostly it will be a coyote rifle with an occasional deer or antelope hunt thrown in. It will come in a 1-8 twist and I noticed this round seems to give higher velocities than the 243, even though it seems it would have a bit less case capacity. Will I need to use heavier bullets generally say 85 grains and up due to the faster speeds and twist? The Speer data lists 3350 to 3400fps with 90 gr. bullets. So I am trying to decide between ordering a bunch of 95 gr. Ballistic Tips hoping that at 3300 fps they will satisfactorily destroy coyotes and drop deer or should I stock up on 105 gr. Hornady BTHP's to shoot paper, coyotes and deer with? Will this bullet open fast enough to put coyotes down fast?

I'm shooting 95 gr LRXs but have little experience yet with that bullet......moderate exit on a coyote.
Hoping for a wolf or two this coming winter or I may try it on a caribou.

The 108 ELD Ms are ok on frontal chest shot but a broadside shoulder shot that hits bone makes a mess.

Around 40 grs RL16 works for me.

What about a 90 grain Ballistic Tip?

Should be more than enough for your intended purposes.

Or the Hornady 87 grain BTHP if still available.

It sounds to me like you are making a mistake. I think you'll run into contradictory needs with varmint bullets, fast twist, high velocity, and coyotes vs antelope and deer. I think that is too many things to roll into one barrel and do any of them well. If you are not planning to shoot bullets over 105 grains the 1-8" twist is a mistake. If you are planning to go that heavy, then you'll need a longer throat which may not behave well with varmint bullets.

As I add up the factors you list, if it was me, I'd go with a 1-12" twist which will handle the 90 grain ballistic tip and accubond, plus 95 grain partition for antelope and deer, then for coyotes I'd look hard at the 70 grain ballistic tip .. the 65, 75, and 87 grain vmax and the 80 grain ballistic tip would be backup plans for coyotes.

... but that's me.

The fast twist is not going to work well with conventional varmint bullets .. Hornady SX, Speer TNT, Sierra Blitz. It might for a short while while the throat is smooth but after it gets a little rough, it'll start tearing the jackets and the bullets will start to tumble, maybe even come apart in flight. I've had that happen with several .22-250s, a couple .17s, and a .204 as they "aged." .243 / 6mm is not immune.

I have on hand some four boxes of Speer 100 gr. BTSP bullets, will just play with them for a while. Have to shoot at least a couple boxes of factory through it anyway.

Once I shoot it a couple times at long range steel or paper it won't get shot a lot. I'm thinking a bullet that would do OK for feral hogs also probably more of them than coyotes. Maybe ten of each during the summer before deer season starts. I have a 243 with the 9 1/8 twist barrel and I do want to play with the heavier bullets. As far as that goes I could bring my 223 specifically for coyotes. So I do agree with you on this one. The rifle will be called to do some long range hog sniping when they harvest the Milo or corn. Come to think of it I need to call the guy that farms our property.

Have a buddy that has been shooting those for a lot of years on deer and coyotes out of a 243. Never heard him complain.

If your not saving fur, and want to shoot all of the above critters, then try the 105 Berger hybrid. Very accurate, shoots like a laser in the wind, and very good on game performance. I have shot a coup!e truck loads of coyotes lots of deer, an antelope, a wolf of two and probably a few other critters. I am using an 8 twist barrel. Give an a try.

would also consider 75 grain HP, Sierra or Speer...

70 grain TNT or 70 Varmageddon...

or good old 80 grain Winchester, or Sierra 80 grain and 85 grain SP....

87 grain SP Hornady also.....

Plenty of good choices out there...

the 87 V Max is a good one.. the 75s I can't get to group well enough in anything I shoot that uses a 6mm bullet...

100 Grain SP from Hornady or Sierra are good bullets also...

addendum: heck come to think about it... the short list would be BAD bullets in 6 mm...
Lotta good bullets on the market that just plain work on a lot of stuff..

I'm shooting sierra 95 gr. tipped matchkings. Very accurate in my 6mm creedmoor and very explosive, Sierra claims it's there softest bullet in that range. I use it for p-dogs and don't need them skipping all over the landscape.

Well if time permits I will get to play with all of them.

Second the 95gr TMK and the 87gr bthp Hornady. Only 2 bullets I shoot out of my 1:8 243. Very good performance on medium game
