Gun or archery hunt?

Bring hiking boots, lots of steep country. Good bucks there but it’s hunted hard. Ouachita National Forest isn’t too far away.
1.8 million acres of public hunting, it’s also big steep gorgeous country.

probably gun hunt, but I am open to archery also. I dont plan on doing any tree stand hunting, maybe a small fold out chair on the hill tops. The hiking is something I am looking forward to. We are discussing weather we going to rough it and tent camp or find a cabin rental.

Be sure and check the regs. Lots of WMA muzzle loader and rifle hunts are draw only. Application time is now.

I just looked, Jack Mountain isn’t a draw hunt WMA.

I had put in a call to the Rabbit Sheriffs(Game Wardens) earlier today to make sure that specific WMA was not a draw area. Only thing I forgot to double check was ATV regulations.

I have hunted in Arkansas and camped in a tent to do it, I will say it can get very cold in Arkansas during deer season!

Hopefully by then I’m set up with a tent I can use a heater in if that’s the case.

Jack Mountain is hunted hard. Orange everywhere you turn. Or it was, last time I tried to hunt it ten years ago. Good luck with the locals.

Be careful on any public land any where.
It's a different world these days.
FWIW the first time I heard of a " sound shot " was
in Arkansas
Be sure to go with at least one other adult and
leave trip info with someone at home

Good luck

When you hear a sound in the
bushes and sling some lead
that way

About the same as those who see
a patch of brown color moving
through the bushes and start
shooting, only with sounds

I used to hunt public here extensively, but I'm
scared to go by myself
Not scared of anything in the woods, scared
of the people that don't think about what they're
doing.
That's why I say to go with a partner and leave
an itinerary with someone at home.
Here, you fill out those cards at the entrance and
put half in the drop box. That still won't help a lot
if somebody sends one your way, whether accidentally
or not.
If you've ever heard that WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! !
when one passes by you, you'll know what I mean

YES !

I don’t hunt there but it’s less than 20 mi. from my house.
Many more hunters than deer.

The owners don’t lease...timber co. tax deductible IF open to the public.

There is some beautiful country in the area.

Good Luck, if you go.

Jerry

Well, I was right however it's actually closer than I estimated. This afternoon I reset the trip meter on Harley and rode to JM WMA.

This entrance is on the East end of the WMA and off Hwy 128. Farther West Hwy 7 crosses Jack Mountain and you can find entrances off of it.

The Ross Foundation owns 1000S of acres and this WMA is on a small part of their holdings.

Have you been to AGFC.com ?

I was looking at the map of J M , wma and got interrupted tonight.
If you play around in their site you can see a map of the WMA.

Later tomorrow I’ll check back. If you haven’t found the map I’ll
Give you step by step directions.

Later

Jerry

Found a few maps on the website and then looked on google earth. Does look like it has alot of designated ATV trails in there, it may not be worth hauling more than 1 up there. I know the WMA's where I hunt you can use the bike to retrieve game, not sure if JM offers the same.
