Rem #6 1/2 primers have been discontinued. Winchester # 6 1/2 primers are available. Are the Winchester primers as good for the 22 K Hornet as the Rem 6 1/2 primers were? Any advantage to using them instead of Rem #7 1/2? I use Hodgdon Lil Gun for all my Hornet loads.

Thanks, Dinny

I use Federal small pistol primers exclusively in both my 22h rifles. And I use LilGun powder.

Dale, is the primer the only thing you changed? No powder change?

Hornet cases are perhaps more sensitive to primer type than any other rifle cartridges I've played with--and there are far more powders suitable to Hornet cases these days than ever before. Some work great with handgun primers, and some work best with magnum SR primers.

Which is why I keep a wide variety of small rifle/handgun primers on hand, and try them all--despite what some loading manuals suggest.

Here's a link to a lot of Hornet and K-Hornet info.

Mule Deer turned me on to a case full of Lil Gun and CCI Small Rifle Mag primers a few years ago. Never looked back. 3000+ FPS and great accuracy. Whats not to love?

Yep, the 450 primer really works.

I have Lil Gun and 300 MP, both work well, but I'm starting to prefer the latter in my K-Hornet.

Just after I bought my Hornet about 20 years ago, Ross Seyfried did a two-part piece on the little wonder, one in RIFLE, and one in HANDLOADER. Those were where I first read about using small pistol primers for powders like H110 and also about magnum small pistol or magnum small rifle primers with LilGun, which was pretty new then. He also emphasized that little things mean a lot with such tiny cases. Mule Deer put me onto the CCI 450s after his tests with various primers for Lil Gun. With H110, results for me using CCI 500 and Fed GM100 are pretty much identical, and somewhat light loads with 2400 perfectly acceptable for their purpose. Someday I'm going to do a serious test comparing the accuracy of the Lil Gun/CCI 450 combo against H110/FGM100, same brass and bullets, just to see which is really the most accurate in my rifle. As a practical matter, Lil Gun has the speed advantage along with much lower pressure for better brass life, important for volume shooters, which I ain't.

Was somewhat surprised when MD revealed that he'd sold his Number One. Thought that one would stick for certain.

Let us know how those comparisons work out. Interesting.

And, while you're at it, get a can of 300 MP and compare it to Lil Gun.

As to JB and his #1, he tests a lot of guns in the course of his career. So, even though he has some favorites, I would think he can't keep them all, has to move some to get others needed for future articles.

I remember him saying he sold his .264 WM when he was testing the new 26 Nosler, which he bought. And, that one may not be a permanent resident in his gun safe. Life moves on, as do some guns. I'm sure he has a few "keepers"...

I have CCI 450s, Lil Gun, 40gr NBTs, and Larry Potterfield will be delivering a can of 300 MP soon. I look forward to putting some loads together and giving them a try.

Thanks, Dinny

Just read someplace that 300 MP is tweaked H110/296. I'm more than satisfied with the accuracy I get with H110; the draw of Lil Gun is lower pressure, about 10,000 of whatever units they use, plus more velocity. I'm not one to futz around a lot once I've achieved my purpose.

Pappy,

Sold my No. 1 .22 Hornet when I realized it wasn't getting used anymore--and my CZ .17 Hornet was.

The last time the No. 1 went prairie dog shooting was in 2016, when some friends and I met in southeastern Montana. One of them was Brad O'Connor, Jack's son, and the only vaguely appropriate rifle he owned was a single-shot Colt/Sharps .22-250. I knew he was bringing the .22-250, and also suspected he'd find it kicked too much and heated up too quickly for continuous shooting, so brought a few other rifles for him to try out, including a CZ .17 HMR, CZ .17 Hornet, the Ruger No. 1 .22 Hornet, and a Remington 700 .204 Ruger.

He tried them all, partly because the .22-250 handload (worked up and loaded by a friend of his) used a very heat-sensitive powder. since the weather was typically warm, after a few shots a case would stick in the chamber, and have to be knocked out with a cleaning rod.

I asked him at the end of the shoot which of the other rounds he liked best, but he wouldn't say. The next year, however, he showed up with a brand-new Ruger bolt rifle in .17 Hornet, and a bunch of Hornady factory ammo. He said it shot so well and cost so little he didn't see any point in handloading--and gave me all his fired brass!

I tried the MD load of 13gr Lil Gun, CCI 450s, and 40gr NBTs and V-Maxes in my K-Hornet today. The NBTs shot the best at a smidge over 3000fps from my 20" superlight H&R barrel. Accuracy was superb at 50yds and I intend to load more and shoot them at 100yds next weekend. For a comparative test, I shot a string of 5 shots with the only change being that I used Rem 7 1/2 primers. The group was almost double the size of the same load with CCI 450s. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks, Dinny

The .17 Hornet is on my "maybe " list for my next Contender barrel. Need to take a little breather on buying. That Morton FN wasn't even cold yet, and I snatched up a possibly unfired Browning 92 .44, and while the background check was running, I started eyeballing a nice Krag carbine.

I'm such a slut.
