What is going to be my best value lightweight dual purpose 12 gauge.
Used is fine
Double or semi-auto but no pump
18-20 inch barrel(s) for defense
26(ish) barrel(s) for occasional pheasant and grouse.
All in budget is $500

I would try to locate a used Remington 1100 or 11-87 for that price range. Extra barrels are readily available and it is easy to have a long field barrel cut down for self defense.

ive had issue 11-87's but they were always too heavy.....great for soaking up recoil in a 300rnd of buckshot day but not very quick.

You aren't going to get a two-barrel set in a sxs for $500, at least not one you'd want to rely on for any use except as a tomato stake.

Since I've never owned a semi-automatic shotgun, I can't help you there. My brother used to have a Remington 1100 which was quite reliable, but I never used it for anything and don't know what they go for these days.

What it got you is:

$500 is not enough to get you what you want. You are not going to find a 2 barrel SxS set of any reliability for that price and about the only semiauto option possible you do not like. Unless you substantially up your price point or accept a pump gun you are out of luck unless you find someone desperate for money, have no clue as to what they have, or it is stolen.

Other than asking here, have you made any effort on your own looking for a SxS two barrel set in that price range?

However, there are other forums out there that have much more expertise than what you will normally find here with regards SxS's.....Double Gun Journal is one that comes to mind....Maybe they can help.....

SxS’s have definitely fallen out of favor with today’s shooters...there should be some great deals out there...perhaps typing in SxS’s in the Guns International search forum will give you a clue of what is out there. I’m sure hundreds of options will immediately be available. Maybe specifically type in Turkish SxS. Nigerian SxS would be another suggestion.

The Parker Gun Collectors Association would be another source of individuals who mainly deal only in SxS.

Perhaps a call to Lion Country Supply..maybe Steve Barnett shotguns-although they usually deal in SxS’s that cost a bit more.

Best of luck in your search.

Can’t buy a second set of barrels for 500. The only way to go in that price is an 1100 11-87.

5000 might get you something, but 500 is a good set of choke tubes....

Serious answers should be given thought before responding. The fire has turned into a place were the trolls and pretenders are slowly becoming the majority.

Two barrel sets of Stoeger’s would be a rare find. Again, best of luck. A matched pair even rarer.

When you ask a question that borders the impossible, you should not get upset with the answers sarcastic or not , Woodsmaster81 gave you a honest answer. An 1100 used bought right with a field barrel and whatever you can find and modify for a riot config. Is still your best answer, the only better one would be an 870 Wingmaster or 870 Express. I've seen a lot of Mossberg 500's that are used in LEO vehicles also. Working the slide of a 12 ga pump shotgun has a sound all of it's OWN in threat announcement. You asked for advice you don't have to take it or like it either. MB

Save a few hundred more and find a used Benelli M1 Super90 with 26" barrel. If you really think you need a shorter barrel later you can save another $500 and buy an extra barrel.

As for any double gun worth owning $500 is just not going to happen.

When was the last time you needed a shorter barrel? I can not think of a single time I thought dam I wish my barrel was shorter.

I got a Stevens 311 12 ga with twin triggers in good condition for $100 with a box of slugs and a couple boxes of mixed shot sizes and a cartridge belt last year. With 30" full and mod barrels, it handled very poorly for defense or even hunting upland. I shortened the barrels to 22" for a lighter, quicker "bear gun" to use when tracking arrowed bears or going back to pack meat out where a grizzly might be present Also put a Kick-eze on it that was laying around. Carried it on an arrowed bear blood trail this spring and liked it,...bear was dead so no drama at the end. Shot a round of skeet with it the other day...handles very fast....for skeet 26" would have been better. A double is very short with 22" barrels...barely stands in the racks at our skeet/sporting clays range.

For your purpose, I'd get something like I bought/converted for defense and another hunting shotgun with a 26 or 28" barrel(s). Likely you can get by cheaper than trying to find a SxS or Auto with a second barrel within your price range. Good luck!

I can walk and chew gum at the same time so for that money would just buy a pump with two barrels.

There are 2 barrel sets for pumps in your price range built by reputable manufacturers.

There are used semiautomatic shotguns in your price range From reputable manufacturers. Seldom with 2 barrels. There are imports from China & Turkey in your price range, but seldom with 2 barrels, often with no repair parts, and which may have substantial problems with reliability.

There are almost no reliable doubles in your price range. Remember, going “ bang” when you open it & then again 300 rounds later is like asking if your new car started on the salesman’s lot & again 300 miles later. People who shoot a box a year can often be satisfied with them, but those who shoot often do report well here.

Purchased to make my SP shorter for HD (to loan to one of my kids).
But they got a pump.
So leaving my 1100SP set up w 26" steel shot VR bbl.

10 years ago I would have said 2 Ithaca 37's.
Now they would be near $700 if not too nice.
It's not under 5 bills, but its two guns!

The Wby SA-O8 guns are relatively light and work great. In synthetic you might find one with one barrel, the "upland" 26" barrel for around $450.00. I don't know about the cost of a short barrel.
