Ive had a lot of rem 700 and savage extractors fail. They are by far the least reliable. I wont use a 700 anymore. They are like leupolds.

Pretty hard to argue against the New Haven Winchester Model 70, or a Mauser of good quality. Not finding fault with the newer Winchester’s, but, the New Haven’s have a great track record! Many good ones out there, but if I were forced to chose just one.....make mine a Win. Model 70. memtb

I'm with BSA: too many extractor failures with Savages. Enough that I keep extras on hand. Too bad, they shoot well.

My vote is an original pattern M98 with the bolt shroud safety, and 2 stage trigger.
No worries with the pre-64 70s I mostly hunt with these days though.

Too close for irons, switching to scope...

I have never really had an issue with a rifle hunting. Perhaps I'm lucky. If I had to pick just one it would be My '44 BCD Mauser 98K.

What Mike said. I believe the Mauser wins, but my go-to’s are a 280 and 9.3X62 on 1947 M70 actions.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Model 70 SS Classic Action, with original open trigger design.
McMillan Stock. Likely in 270, 7mm Mag, 30-06, 300WM or 338WM.

Next in-line is a BRNO or CZ550 with integral bases.

The closer you are to a Mauser 98 the better off you are for bolt actions. Not much to screw up on a single shot either. Double rifles evolved for a reason.
A back up rifle a few parts and an extra scope will take care of most situations.

I will stick with the Model 70. I have a New Haven 338 WM that I upgraded the extractor and had the trigger slicked up that is 100% reliable. I’ve used It to take Grizzlies a couple of times. My other Model 70 is a pre-64 in 30-06 that is just as reliable. For me, the Model 70’s are hard to beat. I like the 98’s, and have had numerous FN’s that I’d consider just as good.

Six pre-64 Model 70s backed up by Winchester early Model 71s in .348 WCF. On rough country or foreign/African-Alaskan
hunts, carry two rifles. Gunsmiths may be too far away.
The early Model 70 "Rifleman's Rifle" is as tough as an M-1 Garand.

I don't mean to be smart at all. I've been hunting deer and 'whatever' since 1974....46 yrs.
SO FAR I have not had an UNreliable rifle. IF I had, I would not have kept it.

Win 94, 70s, Rem 700s, Weatherby (1), Howa s, Ruger 77s, Tikka s, Savage 99 s
?maybe 1 or 2 other brands I can't remember. FMD..... Fading Memory Disorder.

My go to meat gun is a Winchester 670 tricked out. Bedded n floated, , stamped checkering cut with checker tool, boiled linseed oil finish, sandblast blued. Later 670 with m70 safety on bolt.

Admittedly,I've only (2) receivers over 30,000 centerfire rounds(5 and 6 barrels each) and both are 700's. I've had more issues with CRF,than anything else...despite letting them in the mix.

Hint..................
