Well, looks like the Blackfeet tribe has decided to shut down the east side of Glacier for the rest of the season. Have to wait and see what the gov. and the park service have to say about it but not a good sign for this summer season.

https://www.facebook.com/Blackfeet-Covid-19-Incident-Command-112509410388334/

"..THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS:
1. Closure of the Eastern Border of Glacier National Park. The Blackfeet Tribal Business Council hereby closes the Eastern Border of Glacier National Park into the Blackfeet Reservation including all the following roads: Two Medicine, Chief Mountain, St. Mary’s, Cut Bank Creek, and Many Glacier until end of the 2020 tourism season.
2. Penalty. Violation of this resolution shall be subject to the penalties prescribed pursuant to Ordinance #121.
3. Public Advertisement. The Public Relations Specialist is hereby directed to make notice effective immediately of this Resolution to the Public..."

The Pine ridge Res. over in SD tried the same thing but their gov. shut them down as I recall. Doubt our guv Buttlock will do much about it.

The tourists are piling up in the Flathead with no where to go, waiting for things to open. The west side is probably going to open up a camp ground or two but with this east side situation they may just say F' it to the whole thing and just leave it as is.
A cluster to say the least.

I've struggled to see the sense in the reservations further isolating themselves from the rest of the nation. I don't visit or traverse them frequently any more, and not many do. Its unfortunate but I guess I don't really care. I was planning to visit the Blackfeet reservation on my way through this summer but it looks like I probably won't, and as I said, I guess I don't really care.

The governor in SD did not "shut them down" for what its worth. Governors in most states have very little authority for/over the reservations outside of gaming compacts. The reasons why are a long story.

It’s actually a really short story.

We had planned on spending 3 days in Hungry Horse in the middle of July. I just canceled those plans.

I'm going to spend the days in Yellowstone and the Black Hills.

US Constitution Article 1 section 8 Clause : 1: The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

And clause 3: To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

Article 3, section 2, clause 1:
The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority;—to all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls;—to all Cases of admiralty and maritime Jurisdiction;—to Controversies to which the United States shall be a Party;—to Controversies between two or more States;—between a State and Citizens of another State;10 —between Citizens of different States, —between Citizens of the same State claiming Lands under Grants of different States, and between a State, or the Citizens thereof, and foreign States, Citizens or Subjects.

The "Indian Nations adheres to the fact that are an independent nation and such assertions have been upheld in the courts so they are in fact a "state" as defined in law at the time of the drafting of the constitution, and because of their existence inside the boundaries of the USA they have to come under the laws dictated by the Constitution as follows ;

Article 4, section 2, clause 1:1: The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

Funny how they always want to be a "sovereign nation" but want all of the handouts from another sovereign nation. You want bennies from Uncle Sugar, start paying into the system.

I think the Canadian border is still shutdown. Only the westside of the park is open to Avalanche and the NW corner by Polebridge into the lakes.

I guess the Blackfeet are still sensitive about white folks bringing in diseases, it didn't work out so well for them before.

My friend was out last night in a local Cut Bank restaurant. She advised that Cut Bank, just off the Rez boundary, was being overrun by tribal members seeking alcohol. All the bars and restaurants are closing early there now because of the ruckus , and drunks passing out, acting unruly.

I guess there health issues and high infection rates have nothing to do with Rez lifestyles. FYI I grew up right next to a Chippewa Rez and spent my youth playing on the Rez.

The state is still keeping hwy 2 open through the park. I think 89 will rain closed. They're still plowing out going to the Sun road.
