I have a bag of once fired .270 cases and no longer have a .270. I’m thinking I want to turn them into .35 Whelen cases. Should I just use my .35 Whelen resizing die, or should I use a .30-06 sizing die first, and then resize from .30-06 to .35 Whelen?

In other words, .270 => .35 Whelen or 270 => .30-06 => .35 Whelen

To date I’ve only turned .30-06 cases into .35 Whelen.

I think that's too much of a stretch.

Yes I would size to 30-06 first but I feel unless you anneal you will lose a bunch of cases.

Why not? Try it. I would go to 30 caliber, then 35 caliber.

Definitely would anneal. I always do a candle anneal before resizing a case up to a larger caliber.

Everyone knows the 270 is gay, so if you make 35 Whelen brass out of 270 cases the 35 Whelen brass must be gay also! Stands to reason! 😂😂😂

I would buy some 1 fired 06 and then only need to expand from 30 to 35.

Should be able to expand with little or no loss.

yes anneal first.

^^^ What he said ^^^

When you stretch a .270 dia. cylinder to .358, you will reduce the wall thickness by a factor of 0.75. So, necks that are .014" thick will become 0.011".

Stretching an '06 case will result in a factor of 0.86, yielding 0.012" necks.

Thanks for the insight as to why .30-06 was recommended. I have currently resized a little over 100 .30-06 cases into .35 Whelen, and loaded them multiple times without issue. I also have a stockpile of .35 Whelen factory brass.

This was more about finding a use for the .270 cases. If they aren’t safe bring necked up so much, I may just find them another home.

I’ll buy your 270 brass. $10 per 100, plus I’ll pay for shipping.

Thanks, but I only have around 50 cases and not worth it to pack and mail. I know a bunch of guys at my shooting club that reload, so I’ll see if one of them wants to swap a little .270 brass for something I reload.

When you expand cases they become shorter, not longer.

I don't like cases significantly shorter than the chamber. Had a bad experience with them one time. Open base bullet swaged a disk of bullet jacket into the gap. Could have been bad news if it stuck in the barrel.

Years ago I made a long taper .375" expander plug for making .375 RUM cases from 7mm and .300 RUM cases. A little Imperial Sizing Wax in the mouth of the case, and I've had no problems expanding 7mm and .300 RUM cases to .375 in one stroke. Over the years I've probably expanded the necks of over 100 cases to .375 without a single cracked case. I also haven't annealed any of those cases before expanding their necks.

The 270 cases will have the shoulder set back and the new 35 neck will be some of the shoulder portion of the 270. This may off set the thinner neck slightly.
If you have trim or form dies these are nice for forming. If the sizer dies have a crimp feature like RCBS you might have to trim before sizing to avoid buckling cases. Should work fine but trading the cases is not a bad idea too.
