It depicts a future where the media is an opiate, history is rewritten and "firemen" burn books.

have you seen the original movie ( 1966 ) , how does it compare to 2018 or the book .

Surprised to not see mass book burning bonfires yet.

Except their book burnings will be themed in the opposite direction. The National Socialist book burnings were spontaneous expressions of disgust with Cultural Marxism and pornographic literature, which was falsely characterized by the international press as a symbolic attack on intellectualism.

Odd, I was just thinking during a conversation with some relatives, that our current times are becoming more and more similar to those depicted in 1984 and Fahrenheit 451.

I will be dead sooner than later, but I feel sad for nieces/nephew/ their kids. It's not likely to be a good time for them................unless perhaps they become members of the Oligarchy.

Maybe best to not be very surprised - in these times, books simply are not the core material for transmitting information/ideology - and not the basic tool in the common educational "enterprises"/

Burning books is so last century. NO ONE reads books, especially from libraries. They don't have to burn something no one reads.

Imagine a corporate oligarchy so effective, so advanced and fine tuned that its citizens still call it a democracy.

Banning ideas being expressed on the internet is the modern form of it, and it's well underway.

Our children's path to success and the oligarchy....lies in their willingly reporting us to the authorities, for subversive thinking and speech.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

For doubters of flintolocke's statement...............

Just look to Central and Eastern Europe in the first part of the 20th Century.

The symbolism, however, is stark.

The original seemed really odd at the time. "Out there" odd. Now it wouldn't seem so much.

I think that's a valid, if subtle point. Internet censorship and one-party control of the press does equate on a functional level with burning of books.

many classic movies are being released with disclaimers ( gone with wind , birth of a nation , etc .. ) , statues are being removed and FB and other sites are enforcing their own rules
there is no end to this.

Americanism is fading fast, and no one voted for it to be abandoned.
