He married at least one Mexican woman.

He played a character that had an Indian son.

He's a racist?

More than one way to serve your nation in wartime. My grandfather had to stay home as he was a farmer and everyone had to eat. He was also about 30.

John Wayne was 34 and his job was to keep spirits up with patriotic movies.

When you see the coal cars headed north, you know Nobama is going up on Rushmore.

the other side of that story was he was considered more valuable in his role as an actor than just another grunt.

To be fair, most of those men we think of were 10-15 years younger than the Duke at the time. Jimmy Stewart was older, but he had a skill to make him an officer. Henry Fonda is probably the most comparable actor at the time that joined.
I wonder how many 35 year old privates with 4 kids there were back then. Yeah, he could have joined, and probably should have, but he didn't cripple your Dad.

I think he probably regretted it and spent the latter part of his career trying to be as patriotic as he could be.

Actually, he had a bad knee due to a previous football injury. Additionally, I don't know what he did, but he did have a commendation for his wartime service signed by Col. William "Wild Bill" Donovan, head of the O.S.S. I don't think it was for making war movies. I think that your bitterness may be unfounded.

My dad was that age and used his tool and die skills in a couple of defense plants. Made good money.

For the record, John Wayne did try to join up and they would not let him.

A tool and die maker was likely more important than a general for the war effort, same with a farmer. If you look at ages on the graves, a lot of them are in their thirties. He would have only been sent out to sell bonds anyway. Rename the airport after a real hero, Jimmy Stewart, he flew bombers and lived.
