I bought a No. 1S medium sporter in 30-06 with the intent of using it with open sights. I bought a Skinner peep off the forum and I can’t get low enough on the comb to use the sight. Is it worth spending money on an NECG sight, or am I just going to have the same problem? If so, it’s going down the road. I have plenty of scoped rifles.

NECG would work but it hangs over the sides of the rib quite a bit and looks very boxy there. An XS sight is a good bit taller than a Skinner, about as high as the NECG, and fits the width of the rib much better. Of course, XS discontinued their sight for the No. 1 but you might still be able to find some old stock for sale around the net.

Here is the XS sight on the same Ruger No.1 S, you can see how tall it is. The much taller front sight also shows the increase in height.

Such a nice looking rifle. Be a shame to part with it.

This might sound a bit drastic but how about sanding down the comb so you can get low enough? Then of course get the stock refinnished. You would have to get the forend done too so it matches.

I think that could work, but would be a worst case scenario. I’d hate to remove wood.

Taking that much off the stock isn't the best idea. The heel to toe measurement would look weird.

He could have a new stock made and leave it oversized enough that it could be fitted properly.

What about mounting the peep sight on a riser mount?

Most inclined to put new wood on it.

I may look into having a stock made with a little lower comb. I may try the NECG sight first to see if it gets me up a little higher.

If you want to use the existing stock, you'll have to raise both front and rear sights. Raising the rear sight only will make it shoot high.

The NECG aperture works really well on the No.1. It's quite small and does not look out of place or destroy the 'look' of the rifle.

You're not the only one. This fellow offers to work down the comb to make it more friendly for shooters of open sights. I feel there's too little drop in the stock to work well for me, but that's a function of my glasses as much as anything.

I ordered an NECG rear and taller front sight. If I can’t get it to work, I’ll let you know.

I would be tempted to send the stock to Mr. Renner to have him do his stalking rifle magic on it and lower the comb at the same time. http://www.rjrenner.com/ruger-no.1.html My problem would be deciding which one as I like all of them especially the Light weight Germanic version.

I usually have the opposite problem, I nestle in to the stock so I end up lifting up away from the stock. Good luck, let me know if decide to send it down the road.
