We've been killing stuff with 125-130's in the '06 for some time now. My feeling, if a 130 will blow thru a WT, why do I need heavier? And at 3,100 fps, they hit hard, mostly DRT's and when not, they don't go far.

So, the .308 project shouldn't be that much different.

Haven't tried 110's. I do have some black tip Barnes 110's for the .300 Whisper. Bet they'd be a hoot at high speed.

May have to try some of those, but for this project, sticking with 125's. Trying to stay focused, resisting getting caught up in a Loony trap, chasing too many options.

My dad started me off with a 308 shooting 125 serrias. Low recoil and pole axed everything I hit with it.

I've killed a truck load of deer with the plain ole Hornady 130gr SP as well as the Sierra 125gr Pro Hunter with both the .308 and the 30.06.

The 130 gr Barnes TTSX, not TSX, 0.010” off the lands with 47.9 Varget and a F210 is one of my favorite loads for deer and pigs. My wife uses the same load. They consistently produce excellent terminal results.

Jeff:

Have any more pictures of that buck? Looking hybrid-ish?

I have some more somewhere. That is a very typical appearance for the native white-tails in the Golden Triangle area of South Texas, which is the west side of South Texas north of Laredo. G2’s typically are shorter than G3’s in that area.

That deer was at least 6 1/2 years old and could have been even older. When they are 6 or 7 or older, they really begin to look like different animals with very long bodies and large heads and large ears.

That area is a different subspecies that inhabits the desert transition area in Webb, Maverick, and La Salle County.

Pre-rut in October, a mature buck averages 225 - 245, and post rut loses 25 - 30 pounds on average.

I use reduce recoil load with 130gr Barnes, Amazing results on WH.

308 Win loads

Reduced load
OAL 2.810"
Case 2.005"
H4895

Min=37.00gr (don't reduce by more than 10%)
Max=49gr

Lightly crimp the neck to increase tension. The 130 TTSX has a short shank.

H4895 and TAC are the only powders I use in the 308, but I don't load heavy/super long bullets.

It's weird how a 100 year old cartridge really does 90% of what you need a 30 caliber to do. All that with a 30 degree shoulder, and I'm not talking about the 308 Win.

The 308 Win loaded like a 300 Savage is nice on the shoulder and ears but hell on the deers.

That even rhymed.

May be the reason why a 100+ yr old round is still so popular, alive and well, when some have slipped into relative obscurity.

Of those two, which one do you like better with 125's?
