Dose any one here have any experience with heave bullets in the 35 Whelen? 275gr. and up.
I have some Hawk 275gr. bullets on order. Just wondering if any one has any load data and/or hunting experience.
Thanks

I have some data from the first edition Hornady manual, circa 1967. It's for the Hornady 270 gr. round nose bullet. Hornady included data for the bullet although they had already discontinued it. I do have 85 of those long gone bullets but have not loaded any.
I will assume the powders are the DuPont version if the IMR series with possibly the exception of 4895 as there was a Hodgden version using milsurp 4895.

Start: 3031 41.0 gr./1900 FPS Max: 48.8 gr./2300 FPS
4064 44.0 gr./1900 FPS 51.6 gr./2300 FPS
4895 43.8 gr./1900 FPS 52.0 gr./2300 FPS
4320 44.4 gr./1900 FPS 52.6 gr./2300 FPS
4350 51.4 gr./2000 FPS 56.6 gr./2200 FPS

Hope this helps some. I don't have any data using newer powders.

Of the powders listed I have gotten the best accuracy from IMR 3031 and IMR 4064, would suggest you try them first.

Thanks
IMR 4064 seams to be a good powder in the 35 Whelen. I like my load with it and Nosler 225gr. bullets.

My 350 RM’s are very similar in capacity to your 35 Whalen. I get best accuracy with H4895 - hands down. 3/8 - 1/2 MOA with 250 grain bullets. I have not tried heavier bullets.

I prefer classic.

In answer to your hunting question, I took a huge Shiras Bull Moose last year in Colorado with my Ruger Hawkeye SS/Syn 35 Whelen with 1:12 barrel twist and a 280 gr. SAF going 2,300 fps.

He was standing broadside at 40 yds. when I hit him in the shoulder. He took four steps and fell over dead. Found the bullet under the hide on the opposite side.

I'm guessing that the makeup of the Swift and the Hawk bullets is similar enough that they should produce like pressures with like powder charges. I've heard that both are quite "sticky", though I've only used the Hawk bullets, and they were definitely "sticky" for me, producing pressures much higher with like charges than other bullets of same weight that had gilding metal jackets. What powder and charge did you use with the A-frames?

Surefire, I like your bullet and caliber choice!

I've taken two large bull moose (55 and 56 inch rack) with the 275 grain 358 woodleigh at 2200 fps

two medium-large bull moose (40 and 42 inch rack) with the 300 grain 9.3 mm a frame at 2400 fps.

In all instances: Deep penetration with all shots taken, lots of blood spilled, clean holes with no bloodshot mess.

The standard medium bores sure do make a great moose gun. Always pack the meat right where you shoot them rather than chance of 100-200 yards further out in some swamp hole or brush tangle:

338 federal, 338-06, 35 whelen, 358 winchester, 9.3x57, 9.3x62 all make handy, potent little 4-5 down carbines.

That 2300-2500 fps velocity window is the sweet spot.

Thank you very much! This was the data I wanted to see, and have been looking for.

What powder did you use with the Swift 280 A-Frame?

I do have Woodleigh's manual, I wish they had a few more powder options. It is still ever helpful.

I agree too. I think the 33, 35, and 9.3 calibers are some of the best all around big game hunting calibers we have. The are more versatile, flexible, and affective then they get credit for. Some of the most over looked caliber/cartridges out there.

In addition to Hawk, I would recommend Fury Bullets for heavy 35s. Dennis and I just spoke last weekend and I'm certain he could make a 35cal bullet up to 300gr. He can use different jacket thicknesses and bonding to make the bullet hold up to almost anything.

Thanks, Dinny
