Hello all,
Now that I have begun to learn the good gun shops between Nashville and Richmond my youngest gets himself transferred to Kansas City, Kansas. I’ll be traveling there sometime in the next 10 days or so and would like suggestions on good gun shops along the way. I will probably spend several days in the Kansas City area. I’m a blue and walnut kinda guy and enjoy shops with a good selection of used rifles. Not much into handguns and I’m good on shotguns.
Your suggestions on where to stop are much appreciated!
Rick

Actually, between KC and St Louis, the attraction is all the roadside PORN shops. Right there in the buckle of the Belt.

The Cabela's in STL (technically, Hazelwood) does have a pretty nice selection of used rifles in their gun library. A bit pricey, though. They also have the less expensive used ones out on the floor.

In KCKS, try Frontier Justice https://frontier-justice.com/ They have an indoor range where you can try out (rent) guns as well. A bit on the pricey side, and they tend to the tacticool, but nice folks. They are also just across the highway from Cabela's which generally has a decent assortment of overpriced new and used guns and accessories. I haven't visited there for several months now, but it's right there at your destination.

South of the city, look at Olathe Gun Shop https://olathegunshop.com/ They have a very good selection of new and used, with less emphasis on the plastic-fantastics. I know you mentioned being good on shotguns, but a while back they purchased a rather large collection of shotguns (mostly SxS) running the gamut from Stevens to the real high-end stuff. Worth a visit.

Not a gun store, but remember that Midway USA is right next to the highway in Columbia MO. You can order for pickup at their shop.

Have a safe drive.

Varmint feller should be along shortly. When the 22 ammo shortage was going during the Obama years he stopped at every gun store searching, and reporting, his findings.

Not a gun shop but if you reload Sierra Bullets outlet is about 18 miles south of 70 at Sedalia. I don't know what the status of their stock is so you might want to check their website first but usually there are barrels of blem bullets at markdown prices. OK deals and you might get a tour. Starline is next door.
If you're in the market for cured meats the Swiss Meats at Hermann is 15 miles or so south of 70 and there is another shop at the town of Swiss.

If you are coming up through Cape Girardeau Shooters Gun Shop is pretty good. On up the road closer to STL is Dunn's Sporting Goods in Pevely. They are very good people.

Ted, I stayed on 55 hwy, but you are right about Smitty's. They have some nice stuff and they mostly deal in wood stocked hunting guns. Further south is Arcadia Valley Sporting Goods. They advertise over 1400 guns. They have a bunch, but dang they are a goofy group of knuckleheads.

H & H GUNS in warrenton exit 193 from I-70 you can find a treasure or 2 in there.

Franklin firearms in Troy mo. about 15 miles north of I-70 from wentzville has some nice stuff.

A must stop is Trail Creek in St. Ann near the airport in St louis. They've been shut down do to the 'rona but if open a great stop. Greg is the owner and extremely knowledgeable in classic firearms.

Stop in Crane's general store in Williamsburg. $2 sandwiches and a great place to browse and shop

hope this helps.

Agree about Olathe Gun Shop. And right next door is Simmons. Simmons' mostly caters to shotguns but are older blue/walnut models.

Hit up Scheel's at 135th & Metcalf in Overland Park. They don't have an extensive used section, but all of their guns are on the floor to handle as you wish. They do put some of the high-end stuff in glass cases. Last time I was in there they had a modern made Henry Model 1860. The drool spot I left still probably hasn't dried. This is my go-to store. Customer service is very good. I haven't stepped foot in Cabela's/Bass Pro since they opened.

Oh, also check out the Bullet Hole. Firing range/shop that's been there forever and a day.

Hodgdon is also in the KC Metro.

Not a gun shop, but the National WWI Museum is located in KC at Liberty Memorial. I don't know if they're open due to the COVID crap. It's a definite must see.

Thank you to everyone. My sons new home is in Shawnee and it appears my wife and I will be staying in Olathe for our visit. I will have to choose two or three and give them a visit. The Sheels stores I have visited have all been very nice but I didn’t know they had a location that far south. I’ve purchased a couple of rifles from them in the past in South Dakota and Montana locations. I had forgotten about Sierra. I probably have enough bullets to last a couple of lifetimes but would still enjoy a visit and may even buy some more. I’m at an age and health that I should be and am thinning the herd a bit but won’t let that stop me from buying if I find the right rifle!
Thanks again everyone and I’m looking forward to the visit.

Didn't know about the Scheel's. Go to Liberty MO and see Great Guns. Tell them a short guy sent you. Be Well, Rustyzipper.
