So I dropped my turkey off at my taxidermist this Sunday and was certain I wanted to have it mounted in a limb gobbling, however, I seen he had one he was working on in a hanging dead position and I thought it looked really cool so I went with that. Anyone have any opinions on the hanging dead pose for turkeys or have any recommendations for poses? I didn’t want a strutting bird because the tom wasn’t strutting when I shot it. Any feedback or opinions appreciated, thanks!

cant offer much opinion other than mount it the way someone who would inherit it would enjoy it.

For example, I worked with a ice fisherman that did a crappie fishing mount for a coffee table that had cigarette butts and a beer can on the ice because that would remind him of the actual fishing trip.

I wouldn't want to look at trash on the ice.

Well, ummmm, did he do the hanging-dead pose when you shot it? laugh

If you like the hanging-dead pose, make it so. If you have time to sit on the decision a bit, I'd likely do some googlin' to see if something else makes your socks go up and down.

I think hanging dead is my favorite gobbler mount. I used to have one but sold it when moving to a smaller house. It was spectacular. Had rough rawhide tied to the legs and looped over a wrought iron hook on the wall.

The best pose is the one you like best to help you remember your hunt. It's also important to consider how and where you'll display it in your home!

I'd like to see an example of a dead bird mount??

This is a bird I killed and had mounted in 1989.....had it at home for a bunch of years then it spent 20 years in a local (Buffalo Gun Center) gun shop until they closed early this past winter. It's in my shed now and I'll probably be gifting it to a friend of a friend soon who has room and a great place to hang it. I love the limb mount...........oh well, someone else gets to enjoy him for a bit now. BTW, that is the actual birds freeze dried head, painted by my taxidermist and it still looks perfect. I can't stand the heads they use today.

That’s a nice mount. Would like that in my house too. Except it would not fit. It sure looks good, though.

I have a Merriam's tom done "hanging dead". I brought a century old wooden fence post with some rusty barbed wire on it outta my woods. The bird is mounted with a rawhide thing wrapped around his legs and stuck through a crack on the top of the post. The post will free-stand on its base OR hang on a wall with a bracket.

Just be careful that your taxidermist knows what a hanging dead bird looks like. I've seen too many mounts where the dead bird is all spread out in display........defying muscle memory and gravity.

Thanks for all the feedback, I greatly appreciate it. I decided to stick with the hanging dead mount. I will post pics of the mount when I pick it up, it’ll be a while, taxidermist said about a year. Thanks again!

I would like to see it when you get it back.
I have one done in a cape mount and like it as it shows all the colors and is fairly flat to the wall

I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

I think the hanging dead mounts are very cool.

Thought of doing a limit of pheasant or sharptails in the past but never pulled the trigger.

I'm not real big on taxidermy but I think birds are the coolest.

I love the dead mounts for ducks. Never thought about it for turkeys until this thread.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Yoder, that is a cool mount! I can’t wait to get mine back, the taxidermist doing it said probably after Christmas.
