Number 4 lead shot, according to a friend does very well and does not penetrate like buck shot .

Everyone knows that a 9MM is superior to a .45 .......... Two years ago this month I purchased a Ruger 9mm PC Carbine. At that time I just thought it was neat and wasn't considering home defense, as I already have handguns, shotguns and a good supply of ammo. Then this year I suddenly began the "what if" thought process concerning the PC Carbine. I suppose 9mm would also be useful unless we're talking body armor.

Number 4 lead shot, according to a friend does very well and does not penetrate like buck shot . Killed my first buck with it at about 15 yards as a kid while squirrel hunting. It came bounding by and when it made a big jump to clear the same dry branch in Piney Creek bottom I threw up my lawn money bought Monkey Ward brand pump and fired, figuring it couldnt dodge from my movement while in midair. The pattern centered low behind the left shoulder and took the front legs and feet and heart and lungs and ribs. Another shot took him while still in midair in the lumbar spine ahead of the hips. It had made its last steps and leap, crashing into the dead leaves and white sand that had washed down the branch from the nearby hills and there, it became mine.

Nope, copper plated #2, 3” magnum, improved cylinder choke from a 22” buck barrel. Stick the barrel in the room. Pull the trigger. Get a squeegee. Inside the house predator taken down. Outside, any frangible bullet out to 200 yds. MTG

Shotguns with the right load have their place. Just like having a well equipped toolbox.

At close range and over 1200 fps, lead deforms from hitting bone and leaves pellets with rough, sharp edges that tear and RIP organs and vessels.
Soft point bullets are better for taking animals with body shots than FMJ bullets.

Everyone knows that a 9MM is superior to a .45 The best choice is the one that goes bang flop after the trigger is pulled.

Our house is about 26'x40'. Longest shot possible (Not in the basement) is 30'.
Go to shotgun is a 12 gauge.
It would take some effort, going to extremes, to find a load that wouldn't be decisive.
Slugs are out, kick too much, penetrate too much, no advantages. From 6's to 000, it's gonna work. From 1 oz to 2oz, it's gonna work.
Right now, 2 3/4" #4 Buck is the load. It has also been. #4 or #5 3" Turkey loads.
It really wouldn't matter.
The AR is currently the gun to pick up though.
And again. At 30 feet, i dont think the load would matter much. 55gr FMJ to 90gr match it would all be good.
55gr Hornady soft point is what's loaded.

I've always considered my turkey gun a dual-purpose weapon with the same load.
