for those that have, do you use dummy round to release the firing pin. I was thinking of using a fired cartridge.

Yes, for the snap caps that I have on hand. I think I have all my tang safety variety, including the .284.

Would a spent cartridge, with the primer already dimpled/dented, provide enough resistance to really make a difference?

I had a 99C with tang safety for awhile (a cousin has it now), usually left it cocked, sometimes dry fired on empty chamber if I knew it would sit for a long time. I bought it used in 1985, cousin still hunts with it, works just fine.

Just seat a piece of a rubber mudflap cut to the size of the primer and you gotta snap cap. You could probably use a 17 caliber case to cut the rubber plug.

on all my fine doubles I use snap caps, of course bolts and lever safety are easy, did not know if the savage tang would be a problem, thanks for the replys
