US 95 is the only north-south highway through Idaho that doesn't require going into OR, WA, or MT. It was closed Friday by a massive rock slide. This is going to be 'inconvenient' to say the least. Depending on exactly where it is, there might not be a way around it without adding 100 miles or more. I don't know if it's in a spot with a back road around it. Just out of the photos is the Little Salmon River. I don't know of any other roads through that canyon.

Shouldn't take long to clear if they work it from both sides with the right equipment.

It's between New Meadows and Riggins.

That will take a while to clear and stabilize.

It's about 5 miles south of Riggins. That's a very narrow canyon in that area. A big question is what else is loose where those rocks came from.

Years ago not far from there a mud slide covered the highway. Luckily there was a way around that one. They let it dry and settle for a couple years then rebuilt the highway right over the top of it.

That's one way to keep people from Boise out of Hells Canyon.

I think that is between Pollock and the rest stop. That’s the same place they had a slide a couple of years ago
I was near there that morning but headed home

Nobody has a wheel loader nearby? Looks like a pretty easy fix. Couple haul trucks and a Cat 960/980.

Kinda thinking the same thing... figured Idaho folks could outwit a pile of gravel...

It isn't that simple. It also involves what else might be ready to let go. I've been by there many times and always wondered "when", when looking at the mountainsides.

There was a snow avalanche south of Anchorage some years ago. During the cleanup a bunch of stuff came down and took the dozer into the inlet. IIRC they never found the dozer or the operator.

Yep, The hold-up was waiting for the rocks to quite falling before they dove into it. Prediction is single-lane road will be open later today. Some of that "gravel" is the size of small motorhomes and will need blasted to break it down to move it. Single lane should be open later today.
