Had a Remington 30-06 ADL re-barreled 8mm-06

Barnes 180 TSXs 3.250 COAL 52.6 grains of AA2520 BR-2 primer and Norma Brass.2840 fps chrono consistent 1.1 inch groups.

Might just be my new everything rifle.

Sounds like a great load and you're ready for whatever comes your way. Good luck.

That should do it. I came that close to doing one but decided my 8x57 was good enough. Not taking away at all, and I'd still consider it to this day.

What length barrel/contour?

It's 23 " and it's remington factory contour so there was no stock work.

I did the same thing a few years ago. I need to try the TSX. I have mostly been shooting the 170gr SST.

Hmm, I have my first bolt action, a Rem 700 in .30-06, never cared for the way it shot. Might have to reconsider a rebarrel. Congrats.

I have always wanted a 8mm-06 Improved.

I just have an 8x57mm. I would prefer the 8-06 and had thought about building one. But the way I got there was different and pretty well sealed the deal on keeping it as an 8x57. However, It's enough for anything I hunt and real Pig Medicine. Mine is a Yugo 24/47 I had sporterized with the intention of later rebarreling to something like a 6mm Remington. I had envisioned doing a build in 2 steps. First have it sporterized, bolt bent, trigger and safety replaced, new firing pin spring to decrease lock time and while I was at it have the rear sight base removed so I could scope it and use it as an 8x57 in the interim before I proceeded to the second phase of rebarreling.
Only problem was when I shot it, it shot so good I didn't want to change it. 8x57 is such a fine cartridge. So it's still an 8x57 and still has its military stepped barrel. I stuck it in a Boyd's Pepper Laminate stock. I have shot 196 Grain Wolf Premium in it and also had a load worked up for Hornady 150 grain Interlocks. I presently shoot 170 grain Sierra Pro Hunters in it. Right now I have a Leupold made Redfield Revolution 4-12x40 scope on it. It's an accurate smooth shooting rifle and I'll never change it now.

I can see the beauty in the 8mm-06 and I think you have a winner there, especially with heavier bullets.

With the penetration capabilities of the TSX, I think 180 is enough weight and umph for this caliber and at 2800+ it's plenty flat shooting it may be the answer to the quest for the all around rifle.

The 200 Accubond was crazy accurate in my rifle .66 groups but I wanted to break 2700 fps and for whatever reason couldn't find an accurate load at the higher velocities.

The nice thing in my mind about this 'wildcat" is there is no reason it can't be loaded to ~62,500 PSI range in a modern action. If an action is suitable for a 270 Winchetser than it's suitable for any other similar cartridges at 270 win pressures.

Powders in the 4064 thru h380 range seemed to be optimal.

I sling 180gr Barnes TSX's at 2750 and 200's just shy of 2600, that's why I stuck with the 8by

Sounds like you have a plan. I looked for years for a decent 8x57 in a m98 that had been "sporterized" and still had a good barrel. Wanted to 8mm-06 it. It finally occurred to me that the mag box would be short for what I wanted from it. One day I was offered a deal on a 700 classic in 8x57 and never looked back, The 8x57 works well enough I'm not going to go 8-06. I scored some of the old Rem 185 gr Corelokts they used in the 8mm mag. Allways heard they didn't hold up well at 8 mag speeds but I am betting they're ok at 2600 fps .good luck. MB

I had a Rem 700 classix in 8x57 and loaded to modern pressures there probably isn't 75 fps between the potential difference in a x57 vs x63.

I think the classics were 24: bbls so now accounting for just an inch difference your down to ~50 fps.

I was gifted a nice custom 8mm-06 when I got out of the army in '67. For 50 years, it did it all, well. Before the days of fancy bullets, I loaded Rem Cor-lokts, 185 gr over Blc-2 and nowadays use 175 TSX with CFE .223, which duplicates the old load, maybe a little more accurate. Anyway, 50 years of good service Arizona to Alaska. You will be pleased, I think.

Curious, do your 8mm-06 reloading dies have a tapered expanding ball for necking up too 8mm? MB

MB,

They do not. The expander ball is about .270 and the last maybe 1/8 inch has distinct shoulder (radiused) that steps it up to .32. RCBS dies made in 1966.

I've got a Turkish Mauser I've re-chambered to 8mm-06AI.

It's in the process of getting inlet for a new stock, and needs to be drilled and tapped for a scope.

While I had the old military stock and sights on it, I loaded Hornady 195 gr Interlocks over Accurate 2400 and Hodgdon H4350 for deer and hogs. Dropped them like the hammer of Thor.

When this rifle is back in the active rack, I plan on loading up some Sierra 220 gr GameKings and Nosler 200 gr Accubonds to see how these run. The only problem I foresee is the magazine well being a little short for these bullets.

My RCBS 8mm-06 die expands the neck on a 30-06 case with ease. Case forming on a moderate load gives consistent results with the AI expansion.

Nice wildcat!

Back 20 plus years ago when I wanted something bigger than a 270 and not as brutal as a 338WM. I researched the 8mm-06, 338-06, 35 Whelen and their AI counterparts. I settled on a plain old 338-06 and have not looked back. The 8mm got serious consideration, but the lack of bullet choices turned me off and never wanted to mess with the fireforming of brass hassle of the AI's.

Nice to hear you like it..Did mine on a 1909 40 yrs ago. Thought of just the standard 8x06, but Ackley said the cartridge was a hand loading proposition anyway, so went AI. Fire forming is no big deal. That bullet with RL-15 in mine really shines, but so do a number of other bullets. Bought some Quality Cartridge brass, 40, with the proper head stamp...8mmx06, not AI,as was thinking to take it cross the pond. Changed my mind, tho I never had problems with firearms in SA Just didn`t want to chance it.
Got 10 Barnes TSX`s loaded for Wi deer this year.
