my aunts neighbor died and they are seeing if any of the firearms have any value. This has a vari-x iii 2.5-8, but what kind of rifle is this? No markings can be seen. The front scope base might be covering writing. Im not local so I can't inspect.

Anybody know make/model and probable chambering?

Looks like a P17 or P14 as already mentioned. The chambering is likely either .303Brit (P14) or 30-06 (P17). I’d be willing to guess that it’s a P17 in 30-06 but you definitely don’t want to go off of my guess and get the rifle slugged by a gunsmith.

Thanks guys.

What ballpark value would you put on just the rifle? Ok shape, functions, multiple stock carvings.

In that case you may want to repost on any Derek forums you can find.

Take the scope off and sell it separately on ebay, start at a penny and see where it goes.

The rifle is $250.00-300.00 or so if you are walking it around at a gunshow. Not knowing the chambering is a distinct disadvantage.

Definitely split the scope and rifle up before selling.

You might get 150-200 on the scope and 200-300 on the rifle with bases and rings. Find out what it’s chambering is and you’ll have a better chance of selling it. Guys aren’t too keen on buying a rifle from someone that doesn’t know what their rifle is chambered in.

Good luck on your sale.

Look at the bolt face to see if 303 or 3006. 303 will have larger face counterbore for 303 case rim.

Carving on the stock is not a plus in many folk's eye, including mine, but Derek might like it.

Wow, "value?" That carving just kills any value, even if my name was Derek.

No more than a couple-hundred for the poor old P-17, the scope looks nice, maybe 300 depending on any ring marks. I'd offer 200 max for the gun. WITH BASES.

Thing is, it might be a screaming shooter, at which time it becomes an object of lust. I have to wonder a little if it is a shooter, because that's a nice scope and somebody did take the time to personalize it and whittle it. Maybe it was a "pet."

But nobody's getting an Ivy League tuition from THAT.
