I'm trying to help a "non-loony" hunting buddy. He hasn't bought a new rifle or scope in over 10 yrs. Well after 13 yrs he drew a Mtn goat tag... He bought a lightweight 6.5 Creedmoor rifle that is right a 6 lbs (rifle & Talleys) so we don't won't a hubble telescope on this rifle. He is a definite "set it & forget it" guy. After this mtn goat hunt he will return to shooting whitetails at 50-100 yds in the piney woods of FL & south AL.

Guys at his work have been in his ear about Leupold and the CDS. I have mention a holdover reticle. I don't want to get in a debate on the CDS system or reticles. I want to know the quality of the glass like clarity and brightness, etc.. So between the Leupy VX 5 HD and the MeoPro which has the better glass?

C Roy, I love Leupolds, but I also love Meopta Meopro's. I own 2 of the same Meopro's that you are contemplating, except mine have the 4A reticles on them. They are rock solid scopes with excellent glass and an excellent reticle illumination system. I have only looked trough a couple of HD-5's and the glass is very impressive. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I do like the solid adjustments on the Meopta's. RJ

I also don't own either... I have a Zeiss Hd5 that is suppose to be similar to the the MeoPro I believe?? I own a few of the Leupold VX 6 not the HD models...I bought mine when they were all on closeout back in 2016 I believe when the HD's were coming out.

I can't comment on the Meopro but everything i've heard or read about them is positive. I have 2 of the VX5 HD's and i've really been pleased with both and wouldn't hesitate to buy another one or recommend one. They both have excellent glass and tracking has been spot on thus far. Mike

If he’s a set it snd forget it shooter, I think a holdover reticle would be far easier fir him to implement in the field and simpler in pre-hunt preparation.

While not owning the VX5 I do have a new Meopro 3-10x44 w/red dot #4.It beats the AH Kahles by a small margin and can't quite keep pace w/the 3-10x42 Schmidt & Bender but it is one fine scope. Brutally clear and bright plus excellent and solid adjustments. I'm really excited about mine. powdr

I have that same Leupold scope, and also a Meopta Meopro very similar to that one (same reticle but a little higher magnification range (4.5-14). They are both great scopes. Glass is excellent in both, as is tracking so far. The CDS system is very easy to use and that's what I would go for. He should decide what ammo he is going to shoot, and get the CDS reticle for that load, along with the expected elevation/temperature. BDC reticles can be tricky on second focal plane scopes. The CDS would be more foolproof in my opinion, but he should shoot it to verify that it hits where indicated at long range.

Better glass.....VX-5HD and it’s not even close.

The Meopro has plenty “good enough” glass though.

No way I’d trust either of those for “dialing” on a once in a lifetime hunt. Holdover reticles only or pick a different scope.

I have a 3.5-10x44 MeoPro and love it. I’ve only looked looked through a VX-5HD. I’d probably go with the Leupold and swap the CDS turret for a standard one.

If you can get him to choose the MeoPro with the BDC reticle he can dial in the distances using Strlok Pro to his ballistic data. A perfect combo and being able to pick the scope up on sale from Doug is an added bonus. This is just an example of what he can expect to get using the Strelok Pro app with his MeoPro scope.

They way I would go - buy an amazing scope at an amazing optics dealer for an amazing hunt (any mountain hunt is). No, any hunt is, really.

I’d buy the Meopta from Doug and spend the money he’ll save on ammo to practice.

Too bad Doug doesn’t have the close out NF SHV 3-10 forceplex any longer. Would have been another good option at roughly the same price point as the VX-5 for your friend and one I would trust for dialing and durability on a goat hunt. Weight penalty over the other two would only be a few ounces ...

Not hard to guess if option B at twice the cost won't be a better scope but doesn't "Hubble" mean not only big but unnecessarily heavy?

Isn't that also, at least in part, why so many buy Talleys - To shed weight rather than hold a 19 ounce scope in place?

Talk to him about the view and brightness he can expect through the Swaro, how it will be a 1/3rd lighter , and how it just seems to make the most sense for his rig as whole.

Why not consider buying the VX-5 HD from Doug too?

I have both scopes you mentioned. Both are very good.

If $$ is a concern the Meopta is a great deal and considerably less than the VX5. My only complaint with the scope is the illumination.. the dot is very very dim. To be honest I can't even see it in the lower half of its settings.
By contrast the illumination in the VX5 is fantastic. I use it every time I hunt.
I haven't had both scopes in the field in very low light conditions to compare them side by side. I have had them both at the range on the same day and other than the difference in magnification between the two scopes ( the Leupold is 3-15x, the Meopro is 3-10x) the glass is comparable to my eyes with the Leupold having perhaps slightly greater clarity.
I'm very impressed with the Leupold glass and illumination in very low light. Actually it's pretty startling. Of the two this scope would be my pick.

I have the non-illuminated version of that VX5HD and my only gripe is the visibility of the reticle in low light. Illumination should fix that. I wish I had a meopro to compare it to.

The nice thing about illumination is that there are many levels. Too low, turn up the brightness. I prefer to not have the entire reticle illuminated as it can sometimes wash out what I am looking at.

The Meopta BDC reticle is very thin and hard to see.(At least for me)If I bought the Meopta I would get the 4A illuminated Reticle.

I have a Meopro and just Saturday I "looked" through a VX 5 hd. Impressive to say the least but it is several hundred dollars more than the Meopro. Is it worth that, IDK, but I am sure that you can't go wrong with which ever you choose. Good luck on your hunt..
