I just picked up an old Savage (Springfield) 745B It has a little bit of the stock missing on the tang. but descent shape (for me) for a gun made most likely during later part of the 40s. I know they made them from 1940 to 49. there aren't any serial numbers on it but when I removed the buttstock, it does have SZ4 stamped on the underside of the tang. i got caught up in the auction and for got the buyer fee so the $181 i paid may be a little more than some may pay. Does anyone know what the SZ4 may stand for? It is also stamped on the stock under the butt plate.

I would guess the SZ4 is just an assembly stamp, just indicating those parts go together or maybe the inspector or assembly guy.
