Today a mule wandered into my yard.

Looks like a nasty mark on his neck.

On its hind leg too.

looks more like a jackass.....

My brother and I got a jackass that looked just like that for Christmas one year. Great ride for children, just don't go where you need to cross a bridge of get in sight of the barn. If he got a look at the barn you better hang on. He loved children but wouldn't tolerate adults.

I totally agree that it looks more like a donkey than a mule, especially with that black stripe running down from his withers.

I live on 48 acres, on top of a mountain. One mile driveway.
I was walking the dog this morning, half the way up the driveway I saw this animal. I have no idea who owns this creature I am not much of a cowboy I am a carpenter.
I called 911. The dispatcher told me they have a registry of animal owners in the county. He said he would look up and see who might own the animal, and make some phone calls.

They sent out a deputy. He arrived in ten minutes, in that time, the mule/donkey had wandered away, into the thick brush, and he had gone up the mountain side. Thirty feet into these thick bushes, and he was gone! You couldn't see an elephant, thirty feet away in this thick brush.
I rode with the deputy to the top of the driveway but we didn't see the animal.
The deputy told me they have a registry of people who own livestock and they would check and try to find the owner.

Five hours later, at 3:30, this mule was standing in my yard. I called 911. Different dispatcher, the evening shift was on duty. She had not heard a word about the missing mule. So, the morning dispatcher didn't even bother notifying the evening dispatcher about the wayward mule.
Sounded like 911 didn't care.

I sent an email to the Sheriff. I sent one to the 911 dispatcher, and one to the Madison County NC Animal Shelter, with these two photos.

Neighbor just called the mule is 1/4 mile from my house, wandering around. I don't know what else to do.

Summer is in full swing there is all kinds of brush and grass to eat, every time I have seen this guy, he has been eating.

Look ,closer he has already tangled with coyotes or a barb wire fence, and he is in poor condition, were ever he came from didn't have enough pasture to support him, go look for a small place with a dirt yard that's were he came from, ask me how I know ? Rio7

Those injuries are bites from a horse or another mule. Notice they are half moon shaped. That animal is also skinny. Just look at his ribs.
He was in with other livestock competing with other animals for a limited amount of food.
