I just unboxed this scope, LEUPOLD VX-5HD 3-15x44mm CDS-ZL2 (30mm) Duplex Reticle, and the elevation will only turn one way when I depress the button. This is my first CDS-ZL2 so I'm not sure if it's me or the scope. Please advise and thank you.

Was it up against the zero stop?

I think if you had to depress the button, you were. In that case it will only rotate clockwise (looking down at the dial) unless you rotate back to the locked position.

I ordered the scope 7 weeks ago, delayed due to COVID I was told, it came in yesterday and I had just a few minutes to inspect it for damages etc and then had to put it away. I have several Leupold 5HD scopes but the CDS-ZL2 is new to me and I've never actually handled one. I was under the impression that the elevation dial should move in both directions but it may be bottomed out as others have suggested. I couldn't find anything online other than basic operation so I didn't have much to go on.

It’s the zero stop. There’s nothing wrong with your scope. The instructions should cover set up.

Wp, thanks! I did read the instruction, they are a bit vague but will do I guess. I was surprised that it was bottomed out but I supposes that's the way they ship these models. In my experience, traditional scopes are shipped with the windage/elevation in the middle of the range.

257- it’s a little different the first time until you understand how it works. It’s not bottomed out in the adjustment but it’s up against the zero stop.

Look at it some more......
