Just walked out with one for 375.00. With the Leupold 4x. This one is super clean but has the 2 piece trigger. 30-06.

Well done.
That was a screaming deal.

Right? FN 98’s are hard to beat. And it’s not often you see them this cheap anymore. I’m 30-06 rich right now. I may consider having this bored to 338-06, 35 Whelen or 9.3 x 62. Or, maybe not.

Everyone should own one. Marketed by Sears in the 1950’s with High Standard Chrome lined barrels. Some were factory d&t, others were not. Warne makes bases for the factory d&t guns. I stumbled into an all original gun a few years ago, didn’t even have sling swivels. Very accurate with a Leupold M8 4x.

I agree, this is my 4th or 5th one. Only one was a 270, and it was a consistent 5/8’s at a 100 yards. I foolishly sold it. I also let the others go during the Great Recession. I’ve wanted another for a long time, but prices are considerably higher today than they were years ago. This one fell into my lap. I knew what it was the instant I saw it, and would have gladly paid the 400 they wanted for it. The scope, is in my way of thinking, free.

They have chrome lined bores, so if you rebore then you lose that. I'd rebore a different rifle if that's an option. Okie John

I have one that started as a 30-06 but made the trip to JES to be a 9.3x62. Buddy cerokoted it and put it in an aluminum bedded stock. Shoots great and is a light weight thumper in the factory barrel.

Though this 2-piece affair breaks nice and clean. I had an original 98 trigger installed in one of mine. It worked pretty good. I also don’t like the original FN safeties. Love the way they work, but there noisy when you take them off. So I’ll eventually go to a Model 70 type safety. And Okie John reminded me of the chrome barrels. All of mine have always shot very well. It will stay a 30-06.

I had a 51, which is just a checked stock. Excellent shooting gun. Just hated the safety. When I would sling it across my shoulder it would knock the safety off without me knowing it. Really needs a model 70 safety

If you compare the picture of the OP's rifle with the one in the advertisement, not the position of the rear sight. The OP's sight is on the barrel while the one in the ad is on the breech. I have a few M50s and only one was a .270. It had a deep cut in the top of the breech for the rear sight. This bothered me for two reasons. One it looked funny like maybe somebody screwed up plus the fact that I was not all that comfortable with rough 60KPIS that close to my face and a thin spot right where the highest pressures would be. That rifle is not a 7x57 BTW. They must have made a change to the style on the OP's rifle fairly quickly and I haven't seen one with the dovetail over the breech since that .270. I've owned a few of the pre-64 M70s and frankly, I'd take the J.C. Higgins M50/51 over the M70 any day and twice on Sunday. Paul B.

I have found them for $25 - $35 and they all adjusted to a nice crisp 2 lb pull, I never understood why folks replace them. drover

Interesting, I have owned a half-dozen of them and including a couple of 270's, I have handled lots of others but I have never seen the version with the sight dovetail cut into the breech. I don't believe I would want one like that for the reasons you stated. Also in looking at it closely the sight is mounted backwards - Wow!! drover

Never really cared for teh way the sight looked like it was backward though.
