If you were going to buy a 243/6mm which cartridge and which rifle would you buy? The upper budget limit for the rifle alone is about $1200. The rifle will be used for southern whitetails most often well under 200 yards and will likely get pressed into service as an antelope rifle at some point in the future. Hand loading is in the picture.

For the sake of this discussion Tikka and Kimber are off the table. If one of those would be your top pick what would be next in line?

240 Weatherby in whatever rifle they offer suits your budget.

If those two were off the table, then I would pick up a cheap Remington 700 at Walmart, yank the barrel, send it to LRI for their Tier 2 service (w/pinned lug) and spin a Criterion, X-Caliber, or Ragged Hole (Wilson) barrel on it in 6mm Creedmoor (if you bought a short action Rem) or 6mm RemingtonAI (if you bought a long action Rem). Spend the extra money on a good stock, and you are all set.
$380 for the initial rifle
$235 for the action work
$280 for a Wilson barrel from Ragged Hole - up to $430 for an X-Caliber
$35 for the barrel nut
$20 to rent the go/no-go gauges
That leaves you $200-300 for a stock, if you don't want to use the factory one.

Now you have a custom that you can switch barrels on if you decide to go up or down for other things.

Remington 700 stainless SPS if you can find one..in .243

Replace the trigger

Replace the stock with a B&C Alaskan

pick up your choice of nice scope for about $400 or less

Go kill stuff

I’ll go along with that. Another option would be and see if you could find a Model 7 Predator in 243. They were being cleared out at some ridiculously low prices. I have one and it flat shoots.

I had kicked something like that around in my mind. I also thought about a 243 Seven H-S Precision for under $850. The reviews I have read on those are pretty favorable.

Hard to beat the 243 Winchester for general use. I just built a 6mm Ai and looking forward to breaking it in. The 240 Weatherby is great especially if you don't want to fire form cases. I am thinking about a 6 Creedmoor for another build but a little redundant with my 243s and 6mm AI so may go 22 CM instead. Basically you can't go wrong with any of them. The 6mm x 284 doesn't gain that much on the Weatherby or even the 6AI to be worth the reduced barrel life for me. My top picks would be the Creedmoor or 6AI with the CM in the lead especially for a short action. I would get a 7-7.25" twist to be able to shoot bullets up to 115 grains even if I mostly used the 95-105s. For your use you could even go 6mm Br. for super accuracy and reduced component cost, noise, etc. Go with a gunsmith that has done this before as feeding can be an issue in a repeater.

Since you ruled out my top two picks I’d go with this:

If not that Vanguard in 240bee linked up top looks nice, a bit heavier than I like though.

I can get a Nosler Liberty 6MM Creedmoor to fit within my budget. Anyone have any experience with one of those?

Bud has one. It is a 1/2" gun with his loads. Thinking 100 grain Sierras.

It's too bad the Tikka is off the table as the long action will allow bullets to be seated out w/o mag OAL restraints for 243.

I recently chose the 6CM for a 6mm as it fits better in a short action than the 243.

Unfortunately the long seating means squat with a 1-10" twist.

You Drooling CLUELESS DUMBFHUQKS are a hoot,as you do your best. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Firstly, the lauded 240 Turdabee cited,is fhuqking 1-10" and a piece of steaming fhuqking schit,by default. Same goes the Tikka 243Win,despite the "lauded" COAL increase being moot in it's 1-10" Retard Twisted spout. Same goes the Browning X-Bort chambered same and 10" too. You Fhuqktards really "know" your stuff. 'Course,Winchester follows suit,Pre,Post and Transition. Hint. LAUGHING!

At least Imagination and Pretend are free,so you can "afford" to "contribute"...you "lucky" kchunts. Hint. LAUGHING!

Pardon my shooting it all and often on the same fhuqking day,in like fhuqking conditions. Hint.

Not to mention, that the OP,nor anyone that's chimed in able to eek even 50% of the goody outta a fhuqking 223. Hint.

Bless your hearts for trying...you Google Gals are doing great.

Hint.

LAUGHING!

Ain't fast twist, and "only" a .243, but very pretty. Just under budget.

I like that. A 10 twist will stabilize a 100 grain pill just fine. Antelope and southern whitetail don't take a lot of killing, and I don't have the skill to push shots out to distances where the higher BC of the heavier bullets comes into play.
