What problems did you have with the 225 ?

It’s a big surprise, Outboards with all the electronics don’t last around water, especially salt water. Last I heard a computer for a large engine was over 2000. Hasbeen

I threw a rod . The motor was barely out of warranty. Low hours. Dealer went to bat for me. No luck.

Yep. Precisely why Suzuki and Yamaha have gone completely away from electronic anything. The charter captains are loving the new pull start Suzuki 350s. 100% reliability I’m hearing.

I spend a lot of time on and near the water, always have. As a teenager, my first job, summers, was working for my now-wife's grandfather in his marina/boat and motor business. At that time, he was an Evinrude dealer. He would also grab every used 5 1/2 hsp Evinrude he could to put on his rental boats because they were so trouble free.

In my opinion, Evinrude went to hell in the early 70's, around the time they started making bigger motors. I've had a few and they were nightmares to keep running. The last Evinrude I had was a two cylinder 15 hsp that ran pretty well, but was getting tired. I gave it to my wife's cousin. Since then, it's been nothing but Yamaha's on my boats, with the exception of one Honda, a 220 or 225, something about that size. It was okay. Yamaha is eating everyone's lunch in the outboard business. They have been building the best, most reliable outboards for a long time.

Dang, that’s a whack. Big engines can be big trouble.

I’ve got a 72 Model 6 hp that runs well and always has. One head gasket and found a brass prop for it to replace the beat up aluminum one. It’s hanging in my son in law’s shop right now.

OMC with its 90s era german FICHT technology
was a disaster. The tech was good, but OMC did not
have the precision engine manufacturing required,
and rushed to the market,.. customers with problems
were treated like crap, bankruptcy followed.

and as timely fate would have it, Jap 4 strokes
were entering the market about this time.
1996, I went on a remote tropical fishing charter
just one client (me) and he had just invested in
the new Honda 4 stroke.

We still had a 70s era Evinrude 55 at that time
that gave no problems, and was wondering
How the Hondas would hold up over time.
I remember a dedicated offshore fishing family
very early 80s, that had changed from Evinrude
to the new Suzuki oil injected 2 stroke...
to my knowledge they never looked back.

OMC had already destroyed its own reputation.**

Canadian Bombardiers interest was in attaining
the FICHT tech. for their PWC and snowmoblies
and they actually honored many FICHT engine
warranties that OMC rejected.
FICHT development was continued and returned
to market as, E-TEC Direct Injection Technology.

** Before bankruptcy plans were announced,
OMC offered lucrative rebates to get a huge
inventory into US showrooms, Unsuspecting
partners were encouraged to buy, buy, buy!
When OMC folded, a national network of dealers,
& distributors were left with inflated inventories
no longer backed by the manufacturer with promised rebates voided...and consumers were left with no warranty, and a mountain of FICHT problems were
occurring including catastrophic failures.

I remember when Evinrude made boats. Dad owns a 17' fiberglass tri-hull about 50 years ago. Had a 75 horse Evinrude outboard.

Evinrude, Johnson were good motors in their day! Pre 90's! Trying to stay with the 2 stroke, and not spending dollars on 4 stroke technology, cost them customer support! The vro injection systems of the late 80's, started their demise, they havent been worth a crap since! Yamaha built motors for Mercury for a few years, early 2000 era! The carburetor models of Mercury and Yamaha make great boat anchors, in the four strokes during the early 2000's. Once fuel injected four strokes became available, in all brands, of outboards, they not only replaced two strokes, but replaced inboards in the majority of boats! Exceptions are large boats, by large I mean 30 plus foot boats. At least thats what I see on the west coast! Others may have different experiences! I run one Honda, one Mercury, and one Johnson! I would run one of each brand but only have three boats!

All I can do at this point is keep my fingers crossed. My dealer swore by them as being one of the most maintenance and trouble free. My previous pontoon had a 1988 28 hp Evinrude that I bought new. With the exception of an ethanol gas problem, it never gave me any problems for 31 years.

Sorry to hear this. I have a 2005 E-tech that has been a pretty good motor. Had to spend $1500 on a new computer after the boat swamped in a big deluge of about 5 inches of rain one night. Left it tied to a tree on a big bayou that drains about 1/3 of north Louisiana. I learned the wisdom of an automatic pump.

I have a 2007 90 Etec. Works great, I prefer a 2 cycle. Less weight, better torque and no pain in the butt oil changes. The Etec runs, idles, starts and just overall is an outstanding performer. Rarely see a puff of smoke out of it.

Sorry to see this.

I have a Tracker boat on order for next Spring. It'll come with a good old 50 Merc four stroke. My last boat was 35 years ago, and it had a 40 Johnson two-stroke. I am not going to miss the oil measuring and mixing.
