Generally speaking does this method '''usually''' produce good groups ?

I have a few chamberings that there's H & I 4895 data for and a place down the road has both powders .

Also is 4895 a considered an accurate powder in 308win. ?

HODGDON® H4895® REDUCED RIFLE LOADS
For Youth Hunting, Informal Target, and Plinking
__________________________________________________________________________
Hodgdon Powder Company has found that H4895 can be loaded to reduced levels. H4895 was chosen because it is the slowest burning propellant that ignites uniformly in reduced charges. To create reduced loads, the 60% formula is recommended.

Find the H4895 load in the Reloading Data Center for your caliber and bullet. Take the maximum H4895 charge listed and multiply by 60% (.6). The load may be adjusted up from there to achieve the desired velocity and accuracy. This works only where H4895 is listed. DO NOT use in a cartridge where H4895 is not shown.

Example: 30-06 cartridge with 125 gr. Sierra SP bullet. Max load shown in the Reloading Data Center with H4895 is 53.7 grains. 53.7 X .6 = 32.2 grains. The shooter begins with this load, and may work up from there to obtain the desired velocity and accuracy for his reduced load.

Call Hodgdon Powder Company if additional information is needed, 913-362-9455.

If you can't get good groups out of H4895 and a 308 then something is wrong.

I haven't done the 60% thing, but in my experience you can certainly back off from full loads and find good groups.

Same here,,,,, backed her down a bit and shot just fine. Only a few grains makes a huge difference in recoil and POI isn't that much of a difference!

When I tried the 150gn Hornady SP in my .308 I made loads with H4895 and Varget. At the range I started with the H4895 loads (I always start with the faster powder for some reason) and stopped there. I came home and pulled the Varget loads down.

My 308 is a Ruger Ultralight with the thin 20 inch barrel. I've packed a few strips of bike tube rubber between the barrel and channel at the fore end and it shoots really good. Three shots into 1/2 to 3/4 inch. That will do me.

The only thing I found where it didnt work for me was a .17 Remington...apparently they must simply have to go fast!

Everything else worked fine, though I usually don't take them the whole way down to .6....it just all depends on what I plan for the rifle/load combo.

Should be hunky dory in a .308!

Good to hear .

I bought 500 308win. cases of the once fired brass off the croc1972 member - going find a good target/hunting load and get some use out of my old rem. model seven rifle . Plus some 'trigger time' loads for a few others .

4895, either flavor, is a great choice for many things.
Everybody should have a pound or 3 stashed. They will work well
in anything not extreme. And accurately.

However, they aren't usually the best specific choice for a specific application.

Kind of the Unique of the rifle world.

I just started playing with these reduced loads in several rifles with some cheap leftover bullets I had. Lots of fun. 36 grains of H4895 is shooting bugholes in my Kimber 7mmo8 with 139 Hornady SP. velocity is around 2450.

I loaded some 100 grn Accubonds in one of my 270s for my daughter. I wasn't sure if the 100s would group well with my twist, but one was just under an inch and half at 100 yards at around 2600 fps. Good enough for minute of deer.

Shot 35gr H4895 w/ 130 Hornady today and put 3 at 3/4" and kicked my light 270 like a 22-250. Didn't chrono it yet but what a pleasure on my terrible shoulder. My 308 kicks even less with similar load but not as accurate in the BAR.

I've done .6 of MAX with H4895 with 7.62X54R which is fairly close to .308. It worked. It made it about a 30-30.

I use a lot of H4895. What I can say is that normally 5% off MAX for most 30-somethings will give me a decent, accurate load. I don't normally go too far below 5% unless I'm loading for kids.
