Yes, they get crazy prices for them. Make mine an Anschutz 54.

I bought one in about 1992 after seeing them at the SHOT Show in the late 1980s...first one I had ever seen for sale...ended up getting it for $1300...

Once they got over $3K just could not bring myself to shoot it any more...ended up selling it about 12 years ago for $3650 to a collector who had just constructed a new house with a 30x30' gun vault in the basement...

Wow! I always liked those. The 40x and the 541's too.

But... that price... Wow!

Seems like about the going price any more on these. I still haven't figured out what the C grade has over a plain jane model, since the wood looks pretty plain and embellishment is pretty non existent....

The equivalent of these right now out of Remington Custom shop is the 547 model, which are very nice and take at least a year to get after ordering unless you can find one in stock at the couple dealers who carry them, at a gun show, or on an auction site like Gunbroker... in a few years you may see the 547's in these price categories... IMO

Talk is cheap,
but it takes money to buy a real 40x sporter

I also have a bunch of Coopers, Anschutz and Kimbers plus some Mausers and Kleinguenthers and my 40X sporter still holds the accuracy record for best groups at 50yds outdoors (of course we’re literally splitting hairs😄). I like them all but those Remington custom shop rifles (at least any I have are all incredibly accurate rifles). That said I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that kind of cash on one - I got lucky on mine it seems.

I would have to witness that... I've got Kimbers, Win 52's, and Remington 40X Target, among others.. and the 40X Sporter I cobbled together by turning down a Target barrel and shortening it to 24" and restocking holds its own with any of them.. and the one time I've shot an original 40X Sporter, it was more accurate than I could shoot as demonstrated by its owner.... I would put one of these up against any Vudoo and it would look better doing it... now, if I could just afford one....

Am I correct in seeing a plastic buttplate?
Assuming that the grip cap and fore end are rosewood I can't believe they would put a plastic buttplate on an $8000 gun.

Believe it....

But it wasn't $8K back when they made it.

I had one back in the day, long before they got that expensive. Rolled it.

My keeper is a Cooper, which I like a lot better than the 40 X sporter.

While mine was "accurate" (a friend did a fabulous trigger job on), the Browning 52C Sporter I had at the same time just as accurate and much more appropriately sized for a .22... My hunting rifle at the time was a 700 Classic .350 RM so this made a nice "understudy" to practice with...

One memorable shot I made with the 40X was while shooting clay birds on a bank at about 110 yards sitting with a sling.. I hit one that only punched a hole through and didn't break it. I told the other shooter not to break the bird as I wanted to see it...

Don't think a drill could have done a better job...

I have a 40x and a 52d also. Target models and they won't shoot as well as a number of sporters that I have.
