There goes my trip away to the Victorian high country after sambar. We were leaving on Thursday. We might go and chase pigs out west instead.

Makes you wonder. They had isolated 10 suburbs as part of the latest outbreak, but what the heck, lets shut down the state border just to play it safe. It's "one-up-man-ship" by the state politicians more than anything - our state is better than your state, your state is a contagion cesspool, we look after our state better because we are better politicians and deserve to be re-elected. The economic pain from restricting trade by doing this and the long term effect on the economy really don't seem to matter to them - they only need to make it to the next election, and hopefully the pain will have subsided by the time of the election after that (with a bit of luck some other crisis will appear so to divert focus away from previous poor decisions).

The way it's going, shutting everything down every time there's a breakout of Covid/ new bad flu, there is not going to be an economy.

I wonder how many businesses go under this time around, how many jobs lost and the damage to the economy in the long term. Is this going to happen every time there's a bad flu?

Yep, the craziness continues. Believing that there will be a vaccine or effective treatment is driving this knee jerk reaction.

It looks like Sweden's rate is flattening out now. Death rate was kinda high (7% against reported cases) but we'll see how that pans out long term.

5 months to let it run it's course? We're holding it back for prolonged pain and pretty much ignoring the consequential damages. Maybe we need to start accepting that our life span is now reduced but at least get on with normal life again.

Seven percent death rate seems high compared to world figures, which appear to average out at around, .07% percent overall...much higher for the elderly and vulnerable, but low for the young and healthy. But like you say, lockdowns probably just prolong the issue and destroy the economy.

Maybe Jeanette Young is starting to see the light by allowing exemption to the border barrier to Victorian's coming up to watch the footy, and she admitted that exemptions for sporting and entertainment industry personal are warranted because they bring money to the state. Sounds like she is happy to forgo her draconian health stance in the name of profit. Pity that it's hypocritical and she still sees fit to cripple those border businesses without possibility of any exemption. Isn't this decision outside of her portfolio anyway? - sounds like it should be more of an Anna decision.

Maybe Anna got sick of all the criticism and delegated some decisions to Jeanette - would this be a leader folding under pressure?

DBT, here’s what I see in the middle of the US. The publicized death rate is about 1.6% about 16x that of influenza here in my state. In my county, with a lot of older folks, the death rate is .16% or 1.6x that of influenza. That includes dividing deaths by confirmed positive test x 100.

However, it’s accepted that up to 40% of carriers are totally asymptotic, so the denominator is likely much higher meaning the death rate JUST from the Wuhan virus might be lower yet.

But here’s what’s happened in the States until quietly corrected by the CDC about 3 weeks ago. A 20 year something dies in a motorcycle accident and at autopsy tests positive. Counted as a Covid death. A 93 year old dies in a nursing home and is tested post-death; it’s positive— another Wuhan death even though she might have died from a stroke, or an MI, or whatever. All those who died of any means and were tested positive after death were counted as Covid deaths.

The CDC finally differentiated “dying OF Covid” and “dying WITH Covid” those weeks ago. The number of actually dying from the virus complications solely was, let’s say about 5% of the 200,000 publicized for our nation.

Of course we are in an election year and the left deep state was using this pandemic to paint as black a sky as possible to use against Trump and the Republicans. However, a good portion of the left are also true the sky-is-falling types who live in a deluded world of timidity.

Everything Wuhan virus is filtered through politics. It sounds like you have that going on there also.

It's crazy times, especially in Melbourne. The whole state of Victoria must wear masks even though there are very few cases of Covid, none in some regions. Wear your Muzzles people......

Chairman Dan extends state of emergency in Victoria for another month. Never mind destroying livelihoods and sense of well being for millions of residents.

Yep, complete idiots. They are trying to eradicate the virus completely by shutdown controls - saw on the news today, not sure who the state official was, that he said that it would be a world class feat if the virus could be completely stopped here. They're looking for some sort of self gratifying badge of honour at the cost of the country's economy. I think the politicians realise that they won't be in government as the repair to the economy takes place, but will go on to claim all the lives that they saved while they made the decisions.

"Tin hat" time: It wouldn't surprise me if we see another bout of widespread shutdowns before Christmas and then also early next year. Those morons need to sit down and do an economic assessment - cost versus potential lives saved. Terrible as it may sound, It's just part of a risk assessment - people die, and the likelihood and cost factors into it. There is a low level of risk where a certain number of people die that is acceptable. How much do we spend to save cancer patients, how much have we lost to save potential COVID victims - I'll bet COVID wins in that comparison.

And QLD Labour's election campaign propaganda now includes "saving lives to ensure faster economic recovery" - I doubt it! They are hurting the younger people by increasing unemployment and having them withdraw their superannuation to try and stay in the black. The young people are the future economic rebuilders, and the Aussie state governments are doing all they can to cripple them.

And our media stir the fear pot by making out that the increasing number of positive COVID cases in Europe are doom reappearing, yet if they looked at the corresponding death rates they would see that it's a non event - the bulk of those susceptible were taken during the first run.

This pandemic has really been kind of embarrassing - statistically it's like a really bad flu, and doesn't compare to the other earlier flu versions that many more people and age groups were susceptible to.

Rant over.
