MM,

Have you tried StaBall in your 308 with heavies?

Great information and documentation, as always. This stuff is the reason I like this site!

No I haven't.

It looks promising in the 30-06 though. I've been shooting 208 Amax over 54.0 gr RL-17 for 2650 fps from 22" barrel, in the heavy 700. 6.5 StaBall looks like a nice upgrade in performance.

Apparently it's not a powder in the QL database, or I need an update.

Thanks.

Was just curious.

I just fell into a bunch of 4064, so I’m going to experiment a while with that in my 308.

When I lived in Alaska, I knew a bunch of guys who used 4064 in their 30-06s.

I don’t know that I’ve ever used it before.

I've heard 4064 is a good fit in the 308 with the 168/175gr bullets. It was a staple many years ago on the Snipers Hide.

I just found 4 pounds of staball on the shelf at the local cal store. I bought it all and this gives me another idea. I used to shoot a lot of 208 amaxes in 30-06s with rl17 or h4831sc.

I always loved it when friends would laugh as I pulled out an 06 to do some long range shooting. Passed a few other shooters off with 208s in an 06.

I also took a nice 26" 4x5 mule deer buck with a 208 from my 300 wsm. It was a behind the shoulder shot at just under 300 yards and the bullet didn't exit the other side ribs. Those 208s were plenty soft.

I loaded up another 20 of them, and shortened them a bit to try and get rid of the 2-1 I have going on. Hopefully I can air them out a little this week. I would like to stuff one of the bullets into water jugs as well. Just for grins, but you all that have done well with the 208 A-Max's give me enough hope it'll work fine at 2720 start speeds.

Shot it again tonight. Monkeying around with trying to get it just right at 300.

My final 3 shots were on the black

I was able to put my dope on it and ring the 8” steel with my last 3 rounds at 500. I’m sure it could be better but I’m calling it good here. I know it’s consistently better than me

I'm sure he will. Although, his trusty 338 wont be far away. The 30-06 hammers elk too.. Especially with heavier pills like the 200gr partition..

Oh, I’m a believer.

I think the reason he hasn’t yet is recoil doesn’t phase him! He’s an animal with a rifle. And damned fast, he can get rounds down range faster than anyone else I’ve ever seen.

Nice! When you get tired of it you can try some 26 in it!

I think I am leaving it alone Joel. Right now, it is tied for making the trip with my 300 RUM!..... The Mashburn is always a starter.

The 200 grain Accubond seems to be shooting real well for me Gunnut. I have two loads, one using RL25 and the other using Retumbo that darned near shoot the same. 3150 for Retumbo and 3195 for RL25.

The 30-06 has been a pile of fun though. I was literally ready to have the Krieger .358 barrel put on the old girl before I tried the Tubbs Final Finish. So far, it seems like it is good to go. I am sorely tempted to take that one elk hunting.

Twenty years ago my favorite RUM load was the 200 NAB over RL25. I shot length wise almost through a small elk at 503 and the recovered bullet looked good. However, RL25 was so temp sensitive for me it would drop out if my velocity node with about a 50-60 degree change it temp. Shot great at 80-90 degrees then dropped about 80 fps and groups opened up at 30 degrees and under.

I was going through my powder the other day and found some new cans of RL25 I just need to sell. I like some of the newer slow stuff like RL 23 and RL26 as well as retumbo better.

The 200 NAB is an awesome bullet on game. I have much more confidence in it than a 180g.

Thanks BB. I may stick with Retumbo for the gun just for the reason you mentioned.

I saw the 200 AB crush a small bull at 560 just as you describe. It’s a helluva elk bullet!

You're doing good Big Buddy, slightly off topic but mighty similar, I'm about out of the old 208gr a-max's I've used for vermin here at the farm, worked up a load with the 210gr LRAB, only fired it for velocity, 3000 fps over 80gr Retumbo, was shooting my 700 yard gong the other day dialed for the a-max load, slipped in a 210gr LRAB, that sombitch landed in the a-max group, this is going to be more than easy! I have 800 of those bastards too. cool
