Won't work. 788 mag will not feed .358 because of the wide neck. Was going to do it myself about 20 years ago. Tried it and you will have a hard time getting it to feed. Yes .... I remember something about that. Talk to Yukoner about that conversion. I think he told me the same thing.

Ken...that was a super shorty 16.5" Ruger Frontier you sold me. Thanks Bob - couldn't remember the Model and I knew it was real short barrel.

They won’t feed from a 243/308 or 6mm either. I have heard that it can be done, but it sure didn’t when a buddy of mine tried. We ended up bending the daylights out of one mag to no avail. Ted

As others have said. I dont find it offensive either. But I will say. Im using TAC powder in my RAR 358/20" & it has a totally different sound at the top Loads. I have a threaded muzzle so I install KAK linear Compensators on almost all threaded boomers cause I dont like that concussive blast ESP those From the muzzle devices that kids like to much today.
358/788 does sound like a match. I was going to suggest a 35 Rem. But might have to set the barrel back a few threads to clean up and even then might just not be big enough. But the 358 should be fine a d if you reload then your large and in charge of what ya feed it!

I know it's not the same cartridge, I put a Kaw Valley linear comp on my 16" barreled RAR in 7.62x39. Really directs the muzzle blast forward, works nicely.

J Pro with the info that the mags don't play nice with the 358 win. It's time for a different track. I don't know how values are in La. but at gun shows around here those 788 carbines in 7-08 and in nice shape bring $400-500 . Just turn the rifle and find one of those Ruger rar 358 wins,, got to be one floating on the internet somewhere. Cheapest way to go. With one of those wonder brakes or a can might be the way to go for your girls to grow into. A buddy of mine says the way to go on the can is to establish a "family trust" then name everyone in the trust on the paperwork for the can that way anyone in the trust can use it and it doesn't have to be surrendered if you croak cause it's owned by the trust. Had JES rebore and cut the barrel to 18.5 on a Rem 700 for me. Don’t remember it being too loud when I shot it, no more than others.

Sounds like some important advice on the feeding issue. On the noise - I had JES rebore a 19" 30-06 to 338-06 and it doesn't seem louder than any other to me. I doubt the barrel length will be a problem. Rex

I had a 18.5" 358 that was a 788 that had been recorded. I bought it from a fire member in Boise about 15 years ago. I can't remember his name right now. I didn't think the rifle was too loud and it shot well. I mostly loaded it with 140 xtp's at 2900 fps and used it to detonate rabbits and rock chucks. I had some problems with the magazine but I can't recall exactly what they were. Maybe recoil had rounds jumping too far forward and binding on a shoulder ridge. Ive been through too many guns since then to remember.
I also had a Roger m77 with a 16.5" barrel and a scout scope mount. I bid low on an auction and won it but don't like scout mounts and their narrow field of view so I sold it to a fire member for what I won it for.

CW Is this the KAK model you use on your RAR? https://www.kakindustry.com/ar-15-p...-industry-slim-extended-5-8-24-flash-can

I owned a Ruger M77RS carbine in 358 WIN when I was in the USARMY in the early 90s. Recoil and noise wasnt bad at all. Man, I wish I would have kept that rifle. They sell for big money on GB these days. Friend of mine has a Remington M600 in 243 WIN and the muzzle blast is horrible, I wouldnt mind hunting with it, but to sit at the bench and develop loads for it, no thank you.
