Killed a bull elk with a 1894 Winchester in 38/55 and cast bullets along with a mule deer buck. Killed a bison with an 1863-68 Sharpes in 50/70 Gov't. Mule deer buck fell to an original 1886 45/90. Come to think about it I have shot way too many with old calibers to list.

Refer to the post by Southern WI Savage, about classic, not obsolete, cartridges.

Gotcha. In that case I could use any rifle I own. .308 is the most modern of the lot. laugh

I have never hunted deer with a cartridge newer than WWI, except briefly 49 years ago when a .243 tempted me. Nowadays I'm getting back into using single shots for deer hunting, and I'll probably use what I used last year: Ruger 1A in 6.5x55. Sorry, but single shot falling block Savage rifles don't exist.

I don't know of any commemorative rifles or reproduction rifles ever offered in 303 Savage, but there's been multiple in 32-40. Cimarron offered a reproduction 1894 just last year in 32-40. Is that "regular" production rather than "commemorative"? Probably a judgement call.

This year I'm going for one of my Steyrs. One 6.5 1903 and one 1905 in 9X56. I think it will be the 9mm first of all. Then there is the 303 Brit with the older style 215 gr load. I'm sure that load killed lions, tigers, and bears Oh MY! I like round or flat nose for the smack down they put on critters. I like the old Remington 35 cal 200 gr RN in my 358 Brush Gun. Have enjoyed the old guns for many years
Harvested deer with the 1886 33wcf, 71 348, and even a 1873 in 38-40
A lot of fun and great memories

Had an 1899 Savage carbine in 303 Savage. Fine rifle, good cartridge if ignored for decades. I don't hunt with anything much newer than around either side of WWI. Along with the three mentioned in another thread, 8 X 65R and 7 X 64 Brenneke's and a 9 X 57 Mauser I'll be using an 11.15 X 60R double rifle and a 9.3 X 75R Nimrod cartridge in a Thieme & Schlegelmilch drilling. There's a few others that will also get the call on one day or another.

I wouldn't consider Cimarron to be "regular production" unless it was cataloged for multiple years. The annual 700 Classic that Remington are only cataloged for one year, so to my way of thinking they are more "commemorative" than "regular production".

I regularly hunt with a 94 yr old drilling in 6.5x58 Rimmed Sauer, no ammo produced since 1931. It is one of my favorites for close in work yet is still 200 yard capable.

Being a Savage forum I also run a 12ga/22 Sav. HP combo gun in the brush also.

I do still have drillings in 9.3x72R and 7x57R while not obsolete not very common. Also a combo gun in 5.6x50R Mag/12ga

Of coarse there is the 99 in 375 Win that is a great hunting rig for still hunting the forests of Northern WI.

Have taken my 1899, 303, ole#7 out for several years waiting for a buster buck. Will take it this year and draw dink blood blood with it if I have to. Also will hunt with my 1899 32-40 and 25-35 1899 carbine. GW

Or a Ballard-Pope .32-40 breech-muzzle loader, with its false muzzle, mould, bullet lube pump, de-re capper, and breech seating tool. Double set triggers, please and while we're at it throw a nice clear period Malcolm scope on it and I'll kiss your shiney hiney!

I would settle for the same rig built on a Stevens 44 1/2 or Winchester High Wall-- as long as Harry Pope had barreled it.

Yeah, I gotta be different. Darned champagne taste on a beer budget!

Every year I take a couple of Whitetails, as many pigs as I can find, with my Remington Hepburn, 38-55, iron sites, double set triggers, I use it every year at the old timers shoot, here in S.Texas, there's nothing like a old shooter, shooting a old gun, I Really enjoy it. Rio7

So, would a 1952 Russian made SKS (7x39mm) qualify? How about a 1896 Swedish Mauser (6.5x55)? Or a Winchester 94 in 30-30?

Of course, there is always the 1915 Swiss Cheese Rat HP 22.

Then again, any center fire cartridge in Konnectikut is subject to extreme regulations for deer, as in on PRIVATE land that has AUTHORIZATION from Der Fuhrer... I mean State...

Only someone from Maine would come up with THAT! Come to think of it, that might be legal in Ohio.
