I have a friend with a nicely stocked Browning 1885 in 45-70.
What he has discovered, and I agree, is that the gun is uncomfortable to shoot because of the recoil from the lever into the trigger hand. If you aren't really hanging on tight, or bagged down, it can even cut you.
He is considering rebarreling it, but knows that at least the cost of a new octagon pipe might be prohibitive. Does anyone know of a good source? He is thinking maybe chambering it in 280 Rem.
Would there be any complications doing this? I'm thinking at least the forend might need work as a new barrel would probably have a smaller contour to keep weight reasonable?
Thanks in advance for suggestions or experiences with this.

22 Creedmoor with a 1:7, or 1:8 twist..... 280 is a favorite of mine also as is the 8x57 Mauser.

Rechamber to 45-120 and load it to 458 Lott levels. Then the 45-70 levels will feel really light.

I've owned High Walls and B-78's in 25-06, 7mag, 270 WSM, 454 Casull, 30-06 Springfield, 300 H&H 375 H&H and 45-70, and maybe a couple others I don't recall. The 270 WSM and the 30-06 Springfield will do what ever you need, and the recoil wil be somewhat less than the 45-70.
Having said that, one could always sell his 45-70 high wall and buy a new Winchester in 6.5 Creed or a Low Wall in 260 Rem.
ya!

257 Roberts, 348, 38-55 or 30-40, probably cheaper to sell and buy what you want. A few years ago I passed on a beautiful B78 in 45-70 with Leupold glass, he came down to $900 from $1200 and I passed. He said I was the only one to even look at it. Had beautiful wood.

Will a 280 recoil less than a moderately loaded 45/70? Based on my experience with a 30-06, probably not. Why not just use the 45/70 with loads that are comfortable?

If he handloads, load it down. Another option, the factory Remington 405 gr load at 1300 fps is a mild kicker. I've recently started loading 300 gr bullets down to 1600 fps from my previous 2100 fps loads. BIG difference in recoil.

Gloves?
Have a Highwall that loves 530 gr bullets. Doesn’t hurt my pinkies.

32-40 and have them make a false muzzle, a nose pour mould put in double set triggers. Then I'll trade him a pre-64 70 in 30-06. Everybody happy.

Have had a Browning 1885 in 7Mag for about 30yrs. It shoots 175gr bullets really well. The now discontinued Speer Nitrex loads had amazing velocity. 3100fps with 175 Grand Slam bullets. I have never gotten that with hand loads, although better accuracy. A good long range rifle, but awfully heavy. John
