Hot open faced roast beef on a cold day with green beans and mashed taters.....cup of black coffee for lunch. Makes it bearable to go back out in the cold after lunch and work til dark in the winter.

A man I used to work for was from she-caw-go and came up with these sandwiches he called Italian beef. They were pretty good. You had a little plastic container of meat grease you dipped it in as you ate it.
Some other fellows I worked with would bring these sandwiches made of ground beef all chopped up instead of in a patty like a hamburger. There wasn't anything on it like you'd put on a hamburger, just that meat on a bun. Near as I can remember, there's nothing to it other than beef broth and salt and black pepper like comes in the tin can. And rehydrated dried onion.
They were from she-caw-go too

If he "came up" with them he must be really old. There's places in Chicago that have been serving them for almost 90 years.
Know fat, know flavor. No fat, no flavor.
I tried going vegan, but then realized it was a big missed steak.

Richard....I applaud your determination......but this is twice now that you have done this wrong.
Hot beef is a slice of roast.

Hot beef sandwiches come from Chicago (dry, dipped or soaked with hot and/or sweet peppers) or as pit beef from Baltimore.
Certainly not ground round.

Certainly not ground round. The ground round dish is called a Hot Hamburg at the diners I’ve frequented.

Certainly not ground round. Those are called Italian Beefs. They are not the same as an open face hot beef sandwich.

Certainly not ground round. There is the famous Philadelphia pepper mushroom cheese steak sandwich.

That’s called a Philly Cheese Steak.

Years ago a co-worker that was born and raised in Buffalo always spoke of beef on weck sandwiches. He would tear them up when he would visit his parents.
