I have a Helly Hansen rain jacket that really works well, but its a little heavier fabric and hot for warm weather showers. Does anyone make something lightweight and breathable for under $50 that is actually waterproof? Main use will be fishing and outdoor events. I have hunting rain gear covered. Not interested in the cheap Frogg Toggs as those feel like wearing a boat cover.

I have a Marmot jacket. It does well, and isn't too bad in being breathable due to its put zips. Seems like I got a deal on it around $50. I always take it when I'm backpacking.

If you want truly waterproof, the only way to go is Helly or Grundens. They don’t breathe, so if it’s hot out you’ll be as wet inside as outside. Otherwise, true high level breathables which will keep you mostly dry for a fairly long time will cost hundreds. You might be able to get by with a lower quality jacket, but it won’t keep you very dry for long, especially in heavy rain/weather.

Check out Red Ledge Thunderlight. About 50 to $55. It's not the quality of a $150 jacket but it's pretty good for the price. I have one that's been in my gear for 5 years or more. I haven't needed it very often but it's worked great when I did.

Look for the old Precip if they're still available. Marmot re-branded it to "Eco precip" and charged a little more. The non "eco" versions were available a few months ago for under $50.

You can spend any amount you want on rain gear. I've bought alot of it. The best value for me has been Frog Toggs.

I have a camo Herters rain jacket sold in Cabela's, works pretty good, I only use it for turkey hunting and trout fishing.

I've had the expensive stuff, the Red Ledge works just as good. You may have to go slightly over $50.

As wabi said, it is tough to beat an army poncho. Waterproof, fits over anything, breathes from the bottom, makes a good groundcloth or gear cover.

While a poncho would work while sitting still, I'd like for it to shed rain while standing running the boat. I have heavier stuff that doesnt breathe so well but want something lightweight for summer fishing that isn't quite as hot as my Helly Hansen and packs down. I had previously read the Marmot Precip is good and that Red Ledge looks like it would work if it really is waterproof.

Mine's not a poncho, a poncho would be fine.

I ordered one of these a couple weeks ago because they are on sale for $59 bucks. Wore it during a moderate rain last week and was pleased with it. Gotta have the pit-zip vents. A little more than you wanted to spend but they do have free shipping, returns and lifetime warranty, whatever that's worth.

I have the jacket and pants. It works well. Got mine from Sierra Trading Post.

Might be able to find something in Carhartt for around that number. I have a nice (heavyweigh) raincoat from them that I think went for around 60.$, but can’t remember.
